Clemson, Carolina Tumble In Rankings

Published

on

Clemson University fell from No. 3 to No. 9 in the Associated Press Top 25 – and from No. 4 to No. 10 in the USA Today/ Coaches’ poll – following Saturday’s blowout loss at the hands of Florida State. The Tigers (6-1, 4-1 ACC) were manhandled by the Seminoles – who won for the first time in a dozen years at Death Valley.

FSU climbed from No. 5 to No. 3 in both polls on the strength of its big win – coming in just behind top-ranked Alabama and No. 2 Oregon.

Meanwhile the University of South Carolina dropped from No. 11 to No. 20 in the AP poll and from No. 9 to No. 20 in the USA Today/ Coaches’ poll after losing on the road Saturday in humiliating fashion to unranked Tennessee.

Head coach Steve Spurrier’s squad blew a pair of timeouts before deciding to punt the football with three minutes left – clinging to a one point lead over the Volunteers, who converted a big third down play en route to a game-winning field goal as time expired.

The Gamecocks (5-2, 3-2 SEC) have their work out for them next week when they travel to Columbia, Missouri to play the undefeated Mizzou Tigers (7-0, 3-0 SEC). After back-to-back wins over SEC East rivals Georgia and Florida, Missouri is ranked No. 5 in the nation in the AP poll and No. 7 in the USA Today/ Coaches’ poll. That’s the team’s highest ranking since 2008, when the Tigers climbed to No. 3 nationally only to drop back-to-back games to Oklahoma State and Texas.

South Carolina and Missouri face off at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday Night at Faurot Field – with ESPN2 televising the game nationally. Clemson looks to get its season back on track on the road against Maryland.

Here are both the AP and USA Today rankings …
