South Carolina just can’t win for losing when it comes to beauty pageants …

In 2007, our state achieved national infamy when its entry in the Miss Teen USA pageant, Caitlin Upton, offered a borderline retarded response to a question about why so many Americans couldn’t locate their own country on a map.

“I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, uh, people out there in our nation don’t have maps and, uh, I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future,” the Lexington, S.C. resident said.

Exactly …

Fast forward to this weekend, when Brooke Mosteller – daughter of longtime “Republican” activist Cyndi Mosteller – introduced herself to the nation by citing the Palmetto State’s abnormally large mobile home population as a source of pride.

“I’m from the state where twenty percent of our homes are mobile because that’s how we roll,” Mosteller said.

Wow …

Actually (surprise) Mosteller’s math is off. According to the latest data, 17.9 percent of South Carolina homes are of the mobile variety – the highest percentage in the nation. South Carolina is also home to a trailer park-themed reality television show – TLC’s “Myrtle Manor.”

What do you think of Mosteller’s comment? Vote in our poll and post your thoughts in our comments section below …

Brooke is so smart and sophisticated. I couldn’t believe she would say that. I’m sure she was prodded by pageant producers, but I would have expected her to say she wasn’t comfortable with that for her intro — and I would think each girl would come to the pageant with some ideas on what they wanted to say in that segment. And, the absolute irony is that Brooke lives in one of the biggest, most extravagent homes in our state — long way from a trailer.

If she’s so smart and sophisticated, why is she wasting her time being in beauty pageants. Also, for all the money mom and dad pay for the gowns and such, is there not some sort of a media coach for her? That poor girl will forever be remembered for that!

Reply

I doubt she’ll be remembered forever for anything, and considering that this state has claimed such characters as Preston Brooks, who most people have forgotten, this little contretemps will fade the minute another lovelorn SC politician takes the mic and confesses his sins.

That introduction portrayed her as a spoiled young woman who can’t relate to the poor-to-middle class residents of South Carolina. Living in a mobile home is not a joke. The 17.9% who live in mobile homes are doing their best to keep a roof over their family’s head. That intro was 100% embarrassing and degrading.

Living in a mobile home is not a joke, but neither is it any kind of tragic judgment. And while some of the 17.9% are no doubt doing their best, let’s face the facts that some are not doing their best just as some who live in fixed homes are not doing their best. The value of someone’s home is not a reliable indication of anything.

Now was she smart to include herself and all South Carolinians in a trailer park stereotype? No, but then most Republicans are neither smart nor sensitive and might better stay away from social commentary altogether.

With regards to the 20% vs. 17.9%, that is splitting a fine hair.

With regards to mobile homes, why do so many think they are bad? I have owned two and they were nice homes, my second one was more energy efficient than most of my friends’ stick built homes. You can have your home ready to live in a couple days after its moved to the site and they are just as good as stick built homes.

Yes some are dilapidated and trashy looking but it isn’t hard to find stick built homes that are as bad. Mobile homes let lower income people have a pretty nice home, typically in the country. This helps people get away from the silliness of the politicians that tend to congregate in the cities and towns (though Lexington County is trying to act like the whole county is a city that needs regulation). I give her a thumbs up on this issue.

Boz Martin September 16, 2013 at 12:13 pm

Shit, half of the condos down here in the MB area are really the equivalent of double-wides stacked on top of each other. Including many on the beachfront. We call ’em stack-a-shacks. And there are communities of older people with no strict no-kid rules that are composed of double-wides — very neat and well-kept-up. Nicer than a lot of the pricey homes in the area. So it’s all relative.

I’ll pay to see you go to a trailer park or a trailer with 3 broken lawn mowers and the pungent smell of overcooked hamburger wafting out of the open door and call the inhabitants “Trailer Trash” and see if those inhabitants are not offended!!!

The ONLY place you could ever get your money out of a trailer/”mobile home” is if it is the beach or some high dollar retirement community. Certainly not some run down piece of shit off county road 105…….

The minute you have a “mobile home” towed off the sales lot the damn thing depreciates faster than any car imagined. Not to mention lowering the surrounding landowner’s property values.

Here’s my own saying:
