Camden, SC – In response to news reports that surfaced this week that Governor Haley appointed a white supremacist leader to her reelection campaign steering committee, Sheheen for South Carolina released this statement from Sen. Vincent Sheheen:

“Nikki Haley’s appointment of a white supremacist to her re-election steering committee and refusal to renounce his beliefs is deeply disturbing.  The racist beliefs and harmful rhetoric that Governor Haley is standing by have no place in our politics, are offensive to South Carolinians, and once again damage the reputation of our great state. We deserve so much better from our elected leaders.

“It’s been three days since this news broke and one night since Mr. Garcia-Quintana doubled down on his belief in keeping Caucasian heritage ‘pure’ – plenty of time for the Governor to reconsider her decision to stand by this divisive co-chair. Governor Haley, remove Mr. Garcia-Quintana from the leadership position in your campaign immediately and disavow his beliefs.”
