The University of South Carolina baseball team begins the 2013 season ranked No. 5 in the nation according to the USA Today Coaches’ poll. That’s two spots higher than the preseason ranking USC received earlier this week from Baseball America.

South Carolina finished last season with a 49-20 record – advancing to the finals of the College World Series against the Arizona Wildcats.

After claiming national championships in 2010 (over UCLA) and 2011 (over Florida), the Gamecocks came up just short in their bid for a three-peat in longtime head coach Ray Tanner’s final year at the helm. Tanner is now the school’s athletics director – handing off the reins of the baseball program to Chad Holbrook.

USC opens its 2013 season on February 15 against Liberty College with four preseason All-Americans on its roster – sophomore catcher Grayson Greiner, senior left-handed pitcher Tyler Webb, senior right-handed pitcher Colby Holmes and sophomore left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery.

The Crowd At The Ball Game

William Carlos Williams

The crowd at the ball game
is moved uniformly

by a spirit of uselessness
which delights them—

all the exciting detail
of the chase

and the escape, the error
the flash of genius—

all to no end save beauty
the eternal—

So in detail they, the crowd,
are beautiful

for this
to be warned against

saluted and defied—
It is alive, venomous

it smiles grimly
its words cut—

The flashy female with her
mother, gets it—

The Jew gets it straight— it
is deadly, terrifying—

It is the Inquisition, the
Revolution

It is beauty itself
that lives

day by day in them
idly—

This is
the power of their faces

It is summer, it is the solstice
the crowd is

cheering, the crowd is laughing
in detail

permanently, seriously
without thought

By the way, I will never complain about a lack of respect again. Baseball America ranked Arizona, last year’s champion, #24. Yowza.
