Sink The Speaker

It was a fool’s errand when we opposed S.C. House Speaker Bobby Harrell’s reelection to his leadership post in the S.C. General Assembly two years ago … and it’s probably a fool’s errand to endorse his petition opponent in the race for S.C. House District 114.

Also it’s worth stating up front that we are not wild about the so-called “Fair Tax” being championed by Harrell’s opponent, John Steinberger.  We support income tax relief paid for with growth – not tax swaps.

Be that as it may, Harrell (RINO-Charleston), is the poster child for literally everything that’s wrong with South Carolina.  First as House Ways and Means chairman and more recently as House Speaker, he is one of the primary authors of our state’s “Lost Decade” – a period of government growth (and income shrinkage) that has left our state further behind the rest of the nation.  Harrell is also a tireless supporter of our worst-in-the-nation public school system – and the author of the failed (and costly) government-run “accountability” system that perpetually moves academic goal posts in an effort to fool people into thinking our kids are getting smarter.

As if these policies we’re bad enough … Harrell and Gov. Nikki Haley have emerged as the new faces of “Republican” corruption in South Carolina.

In Harrell’s case, he was busted pocketing more than $325,000 from his campaign account over the last four years in dubious travel reimbursements.

How has Harrell responded to his scandal?

(Other than by lying and refusing to release his records, obviously …)

First he assassinated the character of the journalist who broke the story … then he allegedly strong-armed her newspaper into backing down by threatening to withhold an annual $12 million bribe given by the S.C. General Assembly to the newspaper industry.

And we wonder why this is one of the most corrupt states in America?

Seriously, Harrell and Haley shouldn’t be running this state – they should be in orange jumpsuits right now.

Sadly Harrell is unlikely to face any consequences for his actions due to the fact that he appoints all of the “Ethics” committee members who are supposed to be investigating him – and is actually supporting their reelection efforts via his political action committee.

Also so-called “Tea Party” politicians like U.S. Rep. Tim Scott are not only refusing to call Harrell out – they’re actually endorsing him.  In fact Scott went so far as to claim that Harrell “has integrity.”

Make no mistake: With the possible exception of Haley or S.C. Senate Finance Chairman Hugh Leatherman, there is no more corrupt politician in the Palmetto State than Bobby Harrell – nor is there a more fiscally liberal one.  And the fact that he and his supporters continue to pretend he is a “conservative” and a man of “integrity” is insulting – not to mention one of the reasons he continues to be reelected every two years (and continues to wreak havoc on our state’s taxpayers and on our economy).

Voters in Charleston and Dorchester Counties have an opportunity to strike a blow against everything that’s holding South Carolina back next week by putting this diseased dog down.  If they fail to do so, they are only inviting him to continue biting them – and the rest of us – in the ass.
