Keep on unraveling the threads here–I have a feeling that this is far more widespread and common than just this one case and Florence-Darlington Counties.
It’s important that lawyers conduct themselves with the same level of honesty and integrity across the spectrum of different representations. Not just certain cases. Such hypocrisy undermines public trust in lawyers and the courts. Seeking justice in one case, while acting unjustly in another, undermines the entire legal process. Most people already don’t trust lawyers and judges. They don’t believe the system will work for them. Who’s actually in the right and has the truth on their side, seems to matter very little.
I believe the majority of people who’ve found themselves embroiled in legal actions and have entered the world of lawyers, courtrooms and judges, have had their eyes opened to things that look much different, than to those who’ve been fortunate enough not to have to experience that world. Many come away disheartened about the way the legal system actually operates. The mostly negative views of lawyers are not just perceptions; they are well earned. Sometimes the same goes for some judges. Especially cases that are intertwined with estates, businesses and family members. Regardless of the case or individuals involved, what should matter first, last and most – is the truth. Often, that doesn’t seem to be the case.
However, for every case where people are disgruntled and cry foul; it’s not necessarily on the lawyers and judges. There are some deplorable and downright diabolical clients too. Some litigants tell so many lies and masterfully manipulate everyone in their orbit to such a degree, it makes it very hard to get to what the truth actually is. Things would go much more smoothly and quickly if everyone was truthful. But that’s not reality. Most of these family disputes end up in the hands of lawyers and the courts because of the greed and dishonesty of one person. To compound things even further; sometimes lawyers discover their own client is the problem, but to continue to push their narrative for various reasons.
So yes, sometimes the legal system doesn’t produce the right results. Other times the one crying foul is a lying, manipulative narcissist, who tries to flip the script on those who were telling the truth, and it ultimately doesn’t work. That is justice.
People are complex, which makes court cases the same. It’s not as clear cut as saying lawyers, judges and the system is always at fault. Corrupt litigants certainly play a part in the equation.
