Nephron Fallout: Inside the Overthrow

Corporate chaos preceded ouster of troubled pharmaceutical manufacturer’s owners…

Late last week, our media outlet reported exclusively on a high-profile leadership change at Nephron Pharmaceuticals, a much-maligned crony capitalist drug manufacturer based in West Columbia, South Carolina.

As we reported, former chief executive officer and co-owner Lou Kennedy and her husband, chief business development officer Bill Kennedy, were “pushed out” of their roles with the company last Thursday evening (October 15, 2026).

“The Kennedys did not go gently into that good night,” we noted, with our sources indicating they were “walked out” of the company’s sprawling and heavily taxpayer-subsidized West Columbia complex.

As news has broken in wider circulation about the leadership change at Nephron, FITSNews has been working our network of sources in the hopes of gaining additional information as to what precipitated the (latest) corporate drama.

By way of background, Nephron received a desperately needed lifeline in January 2025 when WhiteHawk Capital Partners entered into a $350 million “asset-based credit facility” with the company – financing that Nephron was supposed to use “to support a recapitalization and liquidity for continued growth.”

At the time, WhiteHawk indicated Nephron was on an “impressive growth trajectory,” while Kennedy stated the recapitalization marked a “pivotal step” in the company’s development.

Now, Nephron will be taking its next steps without the Kennedys.

“Lou was terminated,” a source familiar with last week’s shakeup confirmed to FITSNews, adding that consulting agreements with her husband and another executive were “terminated as well.”

Bottom line? Investors were reportedly unwilling to continue supporting the company financially unless the Kennedys were no longer part of the equation.

“The investors at WhiteHawk want to inject more capital in the company to try to address machine reliability and do some things to help the company grow,” our source said. “But the money was contingent upon Lou stepping down. She refused and was walked out. Her and Bill are not allowed on the property without prior notice and must be escorted. All of their laptops and phones were confiscated, they were locked out of the building by IT.”

This account has been independently confirmed by multiple sources at the company.

FITSNews has reported extensively on Nephron’s numerous missteps since the company fled the state of Florida under a cloud of scrutiny and rushed into South Carolina’s welcoming arms a decade-and-a-half ago. Led by former S.C. governor Nikki Haley, the company has been handed tens of millions of dollars in taxpayers subsidies since 2011.

While Haley spearheaded the Palmetto State’s initial corporate welfare package for Nephron, others have followed her lead in the intervening years – at the local and state level.

According to our sources, within recent months WhiteHawk representatives became “directly involved in scrutinizing the company’s management, finances, personnel decisions and operations,” including the examination of “virtually every aspect of the business – including spending, staffing, operational decisions, and executive leadership.”

The Kennedys pushed back against this involvement, our sources indicated – but were increasingly given no say in the matter.

Two months ago, Lou Kennedy reportedly began telling executives to prepare for “significant layoffs” at the company – including the possibility that WhiteHawk could “remove her from her leadership position.”

While many executives were concerned about their own positions vis-à-vis this anticipated shakeup, many privately acknowledged “removing Lou from day-to-day control may be the only realistic opportunity for Nephron to recover from what they view as years of toxic leadership and poor decision-making.”

That day of reckoning finally arrived last week…

As noted in our reporting last week, FITSNews is currently investigating another multi-million dollar taxpayer investment in Nephron that has failed to generate a return. We are also digging deeper into the final weeks of the Kennedys’ tumultuous rule with the company.

Stay tuned for additional reports…
