A man died in the South Carolina Lowcountry early Saturday morning (October 3, 2026) after becoming unresponsive while in police custody. The person’s death followed an encounter in which the subject “physically resisted” apprehension – prompting officers to deploy a Taser, per the Summerville Police Department (SPD).

According to SPD, the individual “flagged down” its officers and told them they had killed another person. When officers attempted to detain the individual they resisted, per a department press release.

“A Taser was deployed, which allowed officers to gain control of the individual and place the individual in handcuffs,” the release added.

At this point, “after being detained, the individual became unresponsive.”

Dorchester County EMS attempted lifesaving measures and transported the individual to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

“We extend our condolences to the individual’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” the agency noted.

The department said the incident remains under active investigation and that the S.C. Law Enforcement Division (SLED) had been contacted to assist.

The Dorchester County Coroner’s Office (DCCO) identified the man as Jerome Green, (46), of Summerville (pdf). His cause of death has not been released as SLED and the Coroner’s Office continue their investigation.

Police did not say whether investigators had substantiated the Green’s claim that he had killed someone.
