‘Write-In Ralph’ Movement Rolls On

South Carolina’s Republican establishment is in a tizzy over growing, grassroots conservative rebellion…

Try as it might, South Carolina’s Republican establishment cannot seem to silence a growing movement of committed conservatives eager to write in the name of U.S. congressman Ralph Norman on the 2026 general election ballot.

Norman, 73, of Rock Hill, S.C. ran for this seat in a special GOP primary election held in the wake of the death of long-serving incumbent Lindsey Graham earlier this year. Narrowly defeating him in that race was Graham’s sister, liberal state government bureaucrat Darline Graham Nordone.

Originally viewed as a placeholder for this seat, Nordone was encouraged by U.S. president Donald Trump, senator Tim Scott and governor Henry McMaster to seek a full, six-year term – which she did with the financial backing of many of the same special interests that propped up her late brother.

Interests which just plunged our nation into its latest costly foreign entanglement, incidentally…

In addition to propping up Nordone, these same special interests subsidized a blitzkrieg of deceptive attack ads against Norman.

Not surprisingly, the attacks on Norman infuriated conservatives. And following her narrow victory, Nordone and her supporters have adopted a decidedly dismissive tone toward the congressman and his backers.

“Nordone and her allies’ brusque dismissiveness of the conservative wing of the party – at the precise moment they ought to be courting these voters – has only cemented the perception that her nomination was a nepotistic coronation of an ideology anathema to the conservative cause,” I noted last month.

Norman voters have been expected to fall in line and support a candidate they see not a less palatable GOP option, but a left-of-center uni-party hack.

The result of all this has been “Write-in Ralph,” an admittedly Quixotic protest movement intended to send a message to the Palmetto State’s GOP establishment – namely that allowing out-of-state interests to foist centrist candidates on the state’s Republican electorate is a recipe for disaster.

Is the message getting through?

Recent polling suggests Nordone is clinging to the narrowest of leads over Democrat Annie Andrews, who has masterfully outflanked her GOP rival on the affordability issues that are dominating discussion ahead of the November election.

Sarah Grace Allen is a conservative activist from Lexington County, S.C. who has been calling out the state’s GOP establishment for launching a “rabid witch hunt of officers and delegates” in the aftermath of the protest movement.

According to Allen, these establishment leaders – who routinely align with Democrats at the state level – are hypocritically gaslighting supporters of the write-in movement.

And targeting them for retribution and removal from the party…

“The fearmongering from the Republican establishment that a Democrat might win the Senate seat, while simultaneously supporting Republican legislators who routinely vote WITH Democrats to kill Republican legislation, is a masterclass in hypocritical gaslighting,” Allen wrote on X earlier this week.

“The GOP’s picking and choosing of which broken rules deserve outrage and retribution and which deserve a blind eye is fascinating,” Allen added.

According to Allen, a much deeper betrayal of the Republican party would be voting for a candidate like Nordone who failed to uphold its stated principles – one who was barely eligible to run for the office in the first place.

“If you want Republicans to rally behind the nominee, perhaps you should care whether the nominee is someone Republicans can support without abandoning the convictions that made them Republicans in the first place,” she wrote. “You cannot demand unity from voters while treating the principles that unite them as negotiable.”

“This is the bed the establishment made,” Allen added. “And bullying those who refuse to lie in it won’t manufacture the loyalty compromise destroyed. A vote belongs to the voter. No candidate or party is entitled to it. South Carolina gives voters a write-in option for a reason, and people should be free to vote according to their conscience without being told they ‘voted for’ a candidate they never supported.”

FITSNews endorsed Norman in the runoff election against Nordone. We have not issued an endorsement in the general election… yet.

“Write in Ralph” campaign + Sen. Nordone’s negligible edge over Dr. Annie + the latter’s surge in funding and polls + Ms. Whitener’s < 100 or so votes on Election Day may well = "The Political Upset of the Year"!!!
