COULD ANOTHER ROUND OF BAD PRESS FOR AGENCY IMPACT DONALD TRUMP’S CHOICE FOR U.S. ATTORNEY?

The S.C. Department of Corrections (SCDC) – which was plagued by multiple scandals during the era of former governor Nikki Haley – is dealing with another disturbing drama.  And this one comes at the worst possible time for director Bryan Stirling, the Haley appointee who is currently one of two rumored finalists for the position of U.S. attorney for the state of South Carolina.

According to reporter Cynthia Roldán, a guard at Lee Correctional Institution has been arrested after she attempted to smuggle alcohol and marijuana into the facility.

Where was this contraband allegedly hidden?

“Inside of her, packaged tightly with black electrical tape,” according to arrest warrants obtained by Roldán.

Whoa … some “musky bud,” if you will.

Roldán’s story notes that SCDC “has been struggling with keeping contraband out of its prisons” in recent years.

That’s for damn sure … among other struggles.

Obviously we’re not saying all of this is Stirling’s fault, although yet another round of bad prison press is unlikely to help his chances of becoming the next top federal prosecutor for the state of South Carolina.  As previously reported, Stirling and S.C. Rep. Peter McCoy were the top two choice of U.S. president Donald Trump for this key position – which languished under the administration of former president Barack Obama.

Stirling was viewed as the initial frontrunner, but we’re told McCoy has been gaining favor as the decision approaches.  We’ll have to see if this scandal pushes the needle even further in his direction …
