COUNTY COUNCIL, STATE SENATE CANDIDATE IMPLICATED IN ELECTION-RELATED PLOT
A candidate for a county council seat (and a State Senate seat) in South Carolina is in jail after allegedly trying to bribe his opponent into paying him to drop out of the race.
Dick Withington – who is running for Horry County council district four – is accused of attempting to bribe the incumbent, Gary Loftus, in exchange for a promise to exit the election. According to our sources, Withington told Loftis that if he paid him $20,000 he would forego his candidacy.
Withington filed for the county council seat on March 16. Five days later he also filed paperwork to run for S.C. Senate district 34 – the seat being vacated by liberal “Republican” Ray Cleary.
According to our sources, Loftus went to the Horry County police department and told them what happened. At that point, police gave the incumbent councilman $5,000 in marked bills. Loftus proceeded to arrange a meeting with Withington, telling him he would give him a downpayment of $5,000 in exchange for Withington dropping out of the race.
Withington met Loftus, took the money and headed back to his car – at which point Horry County police officers surrounded him and locked him up.
In fact he’s still locked up …

I believe he is insane, or suffering from some form of dementia. Hate to think what going to prison will do to him. It’s sad to see minds deteriorate that way.
