BLUE DEVILS’ STREAK SNAPPED …

For the first time since 2007, the Duke’s men’s basketball team is not ranked in the Associated Press Top 25.  Seriously …  over that time frame America has endured a great recession, a “recovery” and is now on the cusp of another economic recession.

The reigning national champions had been ranked in the Top 25 for a whopping 167 consecutive polls – the fifth longest streak in the history of the Associated Press survey (which began nearly seven decades ago).

Duke’s “ranked run” included a pair of national championships – the fourth (2010) and fifth (2015) titles earned by head coach Mike Krzyzewski.  It also included five 30-win seasons and three ACC tournament championships.

But this year’s 15-6 record – including a 4-4 mark against conference opponents – has the Blue Devils feeling blue.  And seeing red (no really … check out DidDukeWin.com to see what we’re talking about).

Of interest?  No. 25 in the latest AP rankings is none other than the University of South Carolina, which made the Top 25 this season for the first time in more than a decade and is looking for its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2004.

For those of you keeping score at home, the record for consecutive AP Top 25 appearances by a men’s basketball team belongs to UCLA – which appeared in 221 consecutive polls from 1966-80.  The Bruins won eight national championships over that stretch, including seven consecutive titles from 1967-73.

DUKE BASKETBALL: NOT RANKED and 19-2 South Carolina is number 25 and on target to have the best season ever besting even 1970’s 25-3 season.

Yep, they might get a chance to win to their first tournament game since Nixon was president.

Refereed basketball sux… it’s a highly flawed game in which refs too often have the ability to decide games…. as in, was that a foul or not? That said, props to it for being a fun game to play with your buds at the street level on the “honor system”.
