DOWN 61 PERCENT OVER LAST QUARTER CENTURY
Teen pregnancy in South Carolina is on the decline – down ten percent from 2013 to 2014 and down a whopping 61 percent since 1991. That’s according to the latest date from the S.C. Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy – and is consistent with national data released earlier this year.
Worth noting? The data includes 18-19-year-olds – who comprised the majority of the estimated 4,000 teen births in South Carolina in 2014.
In 1991, there were more than 9,000 teen births in the Palmetto State.
What’s driving the decline? Well, it sure as hell isn’t the government-funded “abstinence only” education that South Carolina “Republican” lawmakers keep including in the state budget as a sop to influential social conservative activists. In fact, states which require “abstinence only” education tend to have higher teen pregnancy rates.
As we’ve said for years, we don’t believe government should be in the sex education business … period.

Interestingly, most media haven’t mentioned that teens are waiting longer to have sex. In 1993, 44.3 percent of high schoolers had ever had sex, but that number dropped to 35.9 percent in 2013.
Why has no one suggested that the fact that fewer teens are getting pregnant and having abortions might be due, at least in part, to the reality that fewer teens are having sex? The countercultural decision to wait for sex is noteworthy and certainly deserves praise and reinforcement by America’s adults, sex education teachers, and policymakers.

Except research has shown education has helped. Abstinence only states have much higher teen pregnancy rates. Reality shows like Teen Mom have been shown to have dropped pregnancy rates. Turns out actually talking to your kids about this stuff makes a big difference.

The Duggar story about molestation was more about mocking and attacking Christianity than the allegations themselves.

WRONG. Sex Ed has been in the schools for at least 35 years. And dermatologists hand out bcp like candy to clear up acne and have for at least 35 years. Reduced teen pregnancy can not be attributed to more sex ed and greater access to birth control. Personally, I think most girls who get pregnant do it for the attention. And it is somewhat of a status symbol in some crowds. If indeed the teen pregnancy rates are declining, it’s because the word has gotten out that having a illegitimate baby is not worth being the center of attention for a little while and having a fun baby shower.

That is self-contradictory. “Sexual fidelity” has the connotation of not having sex with anyone except your girlfriend or boyfriend. That automatically excludes virgins.

I’m not endorsing abstinence only, but my guess is that those states had higher rates of teen pregnancy before also. Success should not be measured by rates but b6 reduction in rates.
