MULTIPLE CASUALTIES REPORTED …
Multiple fatalities are being reported in connection with a mass shooting at Umpqua Community College – a school located approximately six miles north of Roseburg, Oregon.
The shooting was first reported to authorities at approximately 10:37 a.m. PDT – and initial reports indicate that ten people have been killed and another twenty wounded, several critically.
At least two of the victims died while being transported to area hospitals.
Also dead? The shooter, an as-yet-unidentified 20-year-old male.
“Students are running everywhere,” one witness tweeted during the rampage. “Holy God.”
What motivated the killer? It’s unclear, but police were reportedly investigating social media posts allegedly written by the gunman prior to the rampage.
“This is the only time I’ll ever be in the news,” he wrote. “I’m so insignificant.”
Meanwhile another witness told The Oregonian the shooter “asked people to stand up and state their religion” before he fired indiscriminately.
Finally, Oregon’s top federal prosecutor told reporters the shooter had issued “some sort of race-related manifesto.”
Home to roughly 750 full-time students (another 2,500 are part-time), Umpqua prides itself on providing a “a peaceful, safe atmosphere.”
That atmosphere was obviously shattered violently today, and our thoughts and prayers go out to those impacted by this tragedy.
Of interest? Umpqua was a gun-free zone.
“Possession, use, or threatened use of firearms (including but not limited to BB guns, air guns, water pistols, and paint guns) … is prohibited on college property,” the school’s safety and security handbook noted.
Not only that, security guards on college campuses in Oregon are banned from carrying firearms.

I apologize to all if this really has happened, but at the moment I cannot help but wonder if this might not be another Sandy Hook type hoax
Looking at the size of those three at the front of the line, it was literally aiming at the broad side of a barn. I think the shooter was killed in a stampede. Whatever happened to Oregon with all the wispy, free love, sun dress wearing women?
I find it hard to believe that people actually think Sandy Hook was a hoax.
I find it hard to believe that anyone still belives that it really happened. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and challenge you to listen to this video for starters. This guy brings up the weird actions of police on the scene, with no medical training of significance, declaring twentysomething people as dead, with no medical presence, minutes after arriving on scene. No ambulances, medical airlifts, or like were summoned when you would expect a glut of these vehicles and related personnel. No lawsuits filed by parents against the school, police, and others as you always expect in these situations.
Don’t take my word for it, or his. There are probably dozens of videos, each with legitimate concerns brought out about the fallacy of this hoax. What about social media memorials to some of the victims which were posted hours, even days, before the alleged incident? Check it out in your own good time. Then get back to me and tell me if youbstill believe Sandy Hook really happened.

I will probably get barked at because I make this statement, but here goes.
Umpqua probably had earlier identified itself with that statement because they had banned all weapons, guns and knives, from the campus. The sooner that people realize that there are nuts out there and when they eventually fly off the hook, they are going to harm people. And they will try to harm people in unprotected places because they are sick, cowards, mentally deranged,or a combination.
With Guns, knives, explosives, cars, what ever is handy and convenient. Identifying these people and imposing restrictions, within the limits of the law would be a nice start. And it would not be a bad idea for innocent people to be aware an employ some kind of protection in their day-to-day lives. And there is a reason why these things happen at schools and other unprotected areas. You don’t have to be smart to figure that one out.

My question is how many average armed joe citizens can really stop a mass shooter? All the ones that I’ve read about were stopped by off duty LE, military personnel or security personnel.
There have been a few, including one at the Clackamas mall incident a few years ago. An armed good guy was drawing a bead on the active shooter but wisely held his fire when a bystander behind or otherwise near the shooter would have been in danger from his shot. The bad guy saw the armed citizen and left that area, committing suicide shortly afterward as they frequently do when confronted by police or armed citizens.

They were in the right place at the right time and their fellow passengers were damn lucky (or maybe blessed) because of it. Occasionally, but sadly not too often, police get lucky and are in the right place at the right time to prevent tragedy. Usually, they are called to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and help the Coroner. Armed citizens increase the odds in favor of a good outcome a bit more.

Anyone that receives a Concealed Weapons permit must pass a background check with SLED., including your fingerprints. You must receive the approval of your county Sheriff before your permit is granted. You can lose your CWP for a number of offenses.
Everyone seeking a permit is checked by SLED and the local Sheriff. Are they crime free? Might been a few speeding ticket out there, but you will have your permit pulled for any felony. I know more than one person that was denied because they had a history of what could be minor offense. Not all applying are granted.

I used to live in Roseburg and I would like to say I’m saddened by this tragedy but these mass shootings are all too common. I’ve come to expect one a month if not more. Americans are sick…and I don’t mean mental illness.

The mass shooter has an initial advantage of targets being calm and predictable when he first starts his rampage. He knows most of his targets will be unarmed, no matter how loose gun laws are most people still won’t carry guns. He also has the advantage of being as selective as he wants to be with his targets, meaning the only unintended targets are the ones he chooses to be unintended. If they don’t care who they shoot then any person that gets hit is a “good hit” for them. He will probably have multiple guns and magazines. In some cases the shooter will be armed with an AR. He will probably be wearing bulletproof vests. If they are insane enough they probably are in a mental state where their aim will not be adversely affected. The shooter has planned for this day for weeks, maybe months, maybe even years, he has a plan and is prepared.
The concealed weapon holder may or may not be in a position to surprise the shooter. He may not have a chambered round. He probably isn’t wearing a bulletproof vest. His only targets are the shooters who are obviously armed. There are a lot of innocent lives that could be harmed or killed should he miss. Their gun is likely limited in size for concealment. They most likely will not have as much ammo as the shooter. They may be nervous or afraid, which could affect their accuracy. They may be in an environment that favors the shooter, such as a crowded area blocking line of sight or being in an open area while the shooter has lots of cover. The concealed weapon holder may or may not practice regularly and is absolutely going to be caught off guard without a plan.
The situation favors the shooter. That doesn’t mean someone with a gun can’t save the day, it just means it is unlikely that someone with a gun would even be present, and if they were, would be facing very bad odds.
When 911 is called for these types of situations, they send out heavily armed cops to professionally sweep the area. Sometimes these officers die. These officers are usually going to be more accurate, better trained, better armed, better protected, in the company of other officers, and they still can get killed. What does that say for the average “hero” wanna-be?

Public community colleges in Oregon cannot ban concealed weapons from the ‘grounds’, however (and this is tragically important), in 2011 the Oregon Supreme Court ruled that Umpqua Community College and other state schools could legally ban concealed weapons inside of classrooms and other buildings. Umpqua clearly had just such a gun ban policy in place for its faculty and students.

The gunman who opened fire at Umpqua Community College in Oregon asked victims to state their religion before opening fire, according to multiple reports. An 18-year-old student told the News-Review newspaper that the gunman, after shooting her teacher in the head through a window, told people to get on the ground. He then told people to stand up and state their religion before opening fire. Twitter user @BodhiLooney, who said her grandma was at the school, said the shooter asked people if they were Christian. “If they said yes, then they were shot in the head,” she wrote. “If they said no, or didn’t answer, they were shot in the legs.”

A My Space social media profile is online for Harper-Mercer, which shows two friends, migrating from an older account in February, 2014. In the profile, Harper-Mercer has a connection with a young man with a Muslim name who posted photos of terrorists in Afghanistan holding rifles.
