TIGER’S PLACEKICKER GOES FROM MISSES TO “MONEY”

By FITSNEWS || Clemson University placekicker Ammon Lakip had a terrible start to the 2014 season. He missed his first field goal attempt of the year against Georgia, and had two costly misses in the Tigers’ early-season road loss to Florida State.

Heck, he was actually benched on a point-after-touchdown (PAT) attempt against the Seminoles … with Tigers’ head coach Dabo Swinney openly discussing the possibility of handing the job over to someone else.

Two months later, though, Lakip was named as one of twenty national semi-finalists for the Lou Groza Award – presented annually by the Palm Beach Country Sports Commission to the nation’s top placekicker.  University of South Carolina placekicker Elliott Fry also made the list.

Following his rocky start, Lakip has been “money” for the Tigers – connecting on nine straight field goals and all 26 of his extra points.  He’s now 15 of 19 on the season in field goal attempts – including five of seven from forty yards or longer – and leads the Tigers in scoring with 71 points.

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound redshirt junior from Johns Creek, Georgia deserves major props …

Making this list is an honor under any circumstances, but Lakip has done it after digging himself a huge hole to start the season.
