OKTOBERFEST AT INCARNATION LUTHERAN, OCTOBER 10-12
By Liz Gunn || It’s a bye week for the University of South Carolina, and I think I can confidently speak for all of Gamecock Nation when I say, “Whew!” If ever a team (and a fan base) needed a week off – it’s this one, and it’s now.
A lot of people, myself included, tend to plan things around this weekend; weddings, birthday parties, beach trips, etc. However, there is still a lot of fun to be had in Columbia this weekend if you’re around.
Most people know the South Carolina State Fair started yesterday and will run through the end of next week, but if you’re looking for something a little less chaotic, and a lot less expensive – check out Oktoberfest at Incarnation Lutheran on Devine Street. The real Oktoberfest, in Munich, lasts for 16 days – but this one is just for the weekend, so be sure to stop by while you can!
In its fourth year now, the Columbia festival promises to be a fun-filled event for the family that won’t break the bank. They’ll have 31 different beers available (11 of which are from South Carolina), traditional, authentic German fare like Schnitzel and Spätzle along with Polka music and dancing. The kids can have their own fun with carnival games, face painting and balloon animals.
The festival begins tomorrow, October 10th and will run through Sunday, October 12. Friday and Saturday, the event will run from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. On Sunday, the hours are noon to 6 p.m. Check out their website to see the full menu, music line-up and event map.

Or you could drive to the upstate and see how a real music, food and beverage festival is organized and put on at Fall for Greenville. Top notch entertainment like St. Paul and Broken Bones, Shovels & Rope, Old 97s, American Aquarium… FOR FREE!!!!!
Or you could drive to Bishopville and see etc., etc…at the Lee County Cotton Picking Festival.

It’s confounding to me that Columbia can’t stage an event, outside of the half assed st pat’s festival, that draws people in from more than one county over.
You’re right…the State Fair only brings in about half a million people…I’m sure they’re all from Richland & Lexington Counties.
Fried shit on a stick… hard to screw those up. That event has nothing to do with the City of Columbia, it’s state run.
It has nothing to do with the city of Columbia…yet it takes place in Columbia and is a year round operation HQ’d in Columbia…okay. And you’re wrong…it is neither state run, nor does it receive funding from the state.
Learn something new everyday. The SC State Fair is not a state operation. Please – who is responsible for that? I always just assumed it was the Dept. of Ag.

Yeah, but aren’t many of the entries from out of state? Which would explain many of the out of state attendees?
Perhaps you can do an article on the Film Festival. I, for one, would drive to Cola from the upstate for that if the screenings, etc. make it doable. Would like to hear your opinion on it.
I definitely will! I’m a big fan of the festival -it takes place in the spring, usually April. I’ll keep you posted.

That’s why T-bone keeps comparing the Bull Street development to downtown Greenville, because nobody around Columbia seems to know how to do a goddamn thing without looking to another, more vibrant city for inspiration.
