A guy with a webcam and some dubious Photoshop skills is challenging former S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford for the 2014 GOP nomination in South Carolina’s first congressional district.
Sanford captured this seat in May after a contentious GOP primary race and a bruising special election matchup against Democrat Elizabeth Colbert-Busch.
Ajay Bruno – who brands himself as a “Conservative activist, political pundit, and radio talk show host” – launched his bid against Sanford over the Thanksgiving weekend, saying he wanted “to give people a choice of a candidate who will never betray them, and always strive to be honest and forthcoming.”
The 24-year-old also blasted Sanford as “one of the most corrupt and dishonorable officeholders in America.”
Sanford narrowly averted impeachment in 2009 after he was busted lying to the state about his whereabouts (the governor later famously acknowledged an extramarital affair with his Latin lover, now fiancee, Maria Belen Chapur).
Bruno, who is moving from New Jersey to Charleston, S.C. for the sole purpose of running against Sanford, kicked off his 2014 campaign with a three-minute web video (we made it until around the 1:27 mark) …

Anyway, Sanford has had a few minor hiccups since reclaiming the congressional seat he held from 1995-2001, but for the most part he’s been rock solid on the free market/ individual liberty issues that matter to us.

I actually lost two minutes of my life following your link to his “announcement” on Erepublik (time well spent, though), but didn’t see any of the stalking stuff. I did catch a really wacky thread about the guy purporting to be some Congresswoman’s Chief of Staff, which the blogger apparently debunked with a single phone call. How I hope this guy really moves here, somehow raises the cash, and files. Who knows what entertainment and hilarity may ensue?

Some of our least “moral” presidents have managed pretty dang well. If we could find one that kept his pecker in his pocket and that had Clinton’s ability we might really have something.
Didn’t agree with a lot of his politics but he managed things domestically pretty well.
All you say may well be true. It still doesn’t mean we should strive to elect people who are as morally challenged as is Sanford. And while other less than “moral” politicians may have some significant accomplishments, it is difficult to say that about Sanford. He was an ineffective “no” vote in Congress and was unable to develop consensus as governor–worst we ever had in modern times in my judgment. All this behavior leaves little to recommend him for future public office.
I won’t argue that we should pursue a moral man – in fact, I said as much.
I disagree that Sanford is that “morally challenged”. If we did away with the entire universe of divorcee’s and cheaters in the House and Senate we probably wouldn’t have enough members left for a quorum. At least 36 current members of the house are divorced (most are Dimocrats for the record).
In Sanford’s case, he got caught and he fessed up, no excuses, no “I was drunk and I apologize if my actions were unwelcome”, no “wide stance” or “I did not have sex with that woman, finger wagging” bovine excreta:

Any man who was supposedly in marital counseling with his wife, was asked not to go back to Argentina and agreed not to, and then lied to her, his children (on father’s day weekend) and the people of the state of South Carolina as to where he was and what he was doing is not just morally challenged, he is corrupt. He is willing to breach the public trust for his own personal gain. He cannot be trusted, should not be trusted, and anyone who does is a fool.
This man should be in jail, for stealing public funds not in public office.
By your standard Clinton should not have had a second term – as governor, his dalliances were well known by that point. If anyone should be jailed for stealing public funds – I’d go with Ol’Oxygen Thief Clyburn – he’s still at it.

The criticism is rather harsh. This is the very beginning of my campaign. Rome was not built in a day. The message and character of the candidates is what counts.
As for the defamatory comments below about me…. in reality people don’t like when someone has the guts to stand up to a corrupt, VERY liberal University. That is what I did. Mr. Sanford’s Campaign Manager/Chief of Staff(who by the way is the same age as me) was one of those people who persecuted me.
However, I will say it again. I am running because no one else is, and the people of this great District deserve a choice between more of the same, and a real change. Not that I recall… he found me through LinkedIn somehow based on my old employer in DC and asked me how I had gotten my job … he had apparently harassed another girl at my office a few months before, too. I wrote a blog about him, and then a bunch of my fellow political females all recounted stories of getting harassing FB messages, tweets, etc from him as well.
