S.C. Democratic Party chairman Dick Harpootlian publicly predicted this weekend that State Senator Vincent Sheheen would make Nikki Haley a one-term governor next November … however his choice of words has Haley defenders up in arms.
“In about eighteen months from now … (Sheheen) will have sent Nikki Haley back to wherever the hell she came from and this country can move forward,” Harpootlian told attendees at the S.C. Democratic Party’s Jefferson-Jackson dinner last weekend.
Wait … wherever the hell she came from?
Last time we checked that was Bamberg, S.C. In fact we know it was because the town recently spent tax money to make a sign in her honor. Of course we’re guessing it was Haley’s Sikh heritage (she, um … “converted“) and Indian ancestry Harpootlian was referencing.
“This seems to be a trend coming from the South Carolina Democratic Party,” Haley spokesman Rob Godfrey told BuzzFeed. “Fortunately, the people of South Carolina are better than Harpootlian and his ilk, and we have faith that they will see right through their consistent attempts to play to the lowest common denominator.”
We hope they do … just as we hope they see right through Haley’s bogus employment claims.
Anyway … the problem with Haley isn’t that she’s Indian-American. Or a “sorta” Sikh.
It’s that she promised transparency and taxpayer advocacy to the people of South Carolina and has delivered on neither (here and here).
Harpootlian would be well-served to confine his criticism to substantive points such as those and stay away from the “lowest common denominator” race-baiting.
In fact when it comes to “popping” Haley, our founding editor would be more than happy to give Harpo some tips on how to do it right …

I don’t find “wherever the hell she came from” even remotely offensive. If you think about it, even discarding her Indian heritage, she lived in Bamberg County and Lexington County and possibly other places at different times. This is a lame “issue”.

Unfortunately, SC’s Republican Party seems to have become overrun with them in the last decade or so. Time was, this kind of behavior was not seen in the Republican Party. Used to be, most of the time, you could cast a vote for a Republican and have your fiscal interests and your freedoms looked after. Unfortunately, that is no more.
While I have never been so stupid as to vote “straight party” in my life, I have usually voted Republican. I have voted for Democrats in a number of local elections, for Governor, Sheriff, and such, but NEVER for President. There it was either Republican or Libertarian.
People like Lindsey Graham, Haley, Knotts, Metts, Wilson (Joe and Son), and others who I had voted for in the past (not Joe’s son) have caused me to make an effort to not vote for one single person listed as Republican on the last ballot (11-2012).
The Republican Party needs to get a handle on its own crooks and clean house. Put a cop who takes bribes and the crook who bribes him beside each other. I have more respect for the crook who pays him because the crook is just doing what he does, which is being a crook. The crooked cop is going against all he stands for. By the same token, while the behavior coming out of a lot of our Republican officeholders is what you used to expect from the Democrats, I have more respect for the Democrats who are just doing what they do, than the crooks the Republican party is churning out as of late.

If Sheheen is the Democrat candidate this time, then I’ll vote for the Green Party or whatever other Candidate is out there, but I will NOT vote for Haley. I really wish the Republican Party would read the writing on the wall. Haley narrowly won over Sheheen four years ago. Her win included a lot of SC state employees and retirees, many of whom will NOT be voting for her this time around. The Republican Party would do well to pick someone other than Haley, who does not have a hatred of state employees and retirees and who they do not feel likewise about if they want to win this one.
Personally, I don’t want to see Sheheen go in as governor. He comes from a long line of politician-by-birthright hacks who have had a strangle hold on Kershaw County politics for too many decades.
