South Carolina ranked third nationally in unprovoked shark attacks in 2012 according to data released this week by researchers at the University of Florida.

The Palmetto State experienced five such attacks, placing it in a tie with California behind Florida (26) and Hawaii (10). This according to UF’s Worldwide Shark Attack Summary.

Globally there were eighty unprovoked attacks, with fifty-three taking place in the United States. Domestically, that’s the highest number of shark attacks on record since 2000. Only seven of these attacks (and just one in America) proved fatal, however.

As usual, FITS leaves out the rest of the story…Even little sand shark nudges are reported…but idiots make it something out of proportion.

These ‘Shark Attacks’ are not as bad as bee stings…

My goodness T, you hit the nail on the head. I hate when youre right but in this case you are dead on. Anyone whose ever been surf fishing here knows we probably have more sandsharks and dog fish in the sublittoral zone than people, and sharks are like dogs in that they interact with their world almost exclusivly with their mouth. well imagine that your dog had a mouth full of razorblades. imagine you stuck your hand in the dog bowl while he was eating. Thats how 99% of unprovoked shark attacks go down.

Attacks on lawyers are not included in these numbers — professional courtesy!

If a shark took a bite out of a lawyer, I wonder how long it’d take to get the taste out of its mouth.

There are far more attacks than what’s reported here, but there hasn’t been a fatal attack in SC since the 19th century. By the way, what constitutes a “provoked” attack?

sharks “attacks” as a result of fishing, harrassment, baiting, when swimmers purposfully swim up to the shark…..basically shark fishing/diving and anything common sense would tell you not to do around an apex predator.

“Provoked” ones are when you are offshore fishing, accidentally catch a shark, and when you hit it with the billy stick, it falls in the boat. Not an awful lot of room for 2 people when the boat is full of shark teeth wielded by a mad shark. (Same goes for moccasins dropping into a 12 foot boat fishing in the Congaree).

Know it is early and have had only a couple of cups of Gleason but the picture heading this story and the picture heading SC DEMS UNITE BEHIND COLBERT-BUSCH are one in the same, aren’t they?

Sharks are pesky when you’re trying to surf fish, a real pain in the ass. Scares the piss out of the swimmers when you catch ’em, too. When you throw them back in you just say in a loud voice, go back to mommy, she’s waiting on you.
