A threat issued against a middle school in the South Carolina Lowcountry this week has been investigated and determined to be “not credible,” according to local law enforcement.

According to a news release from the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO), the agency was alerted on Tuesday evening (September 1, 2026) to an anonymous threat involving the campus of Dubose Middle School – a Dorchester County School District 2 facility located approximately four miles northwest of Summerville, S.C.

“Upon receiving the information, the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office immediately took proactive measures to ensure the safety of students and staff,” the release noted. “Additional law enforcement personnel were deployed to DuBose Middle School and William Reeves Elementary School.”

K9 units were also deployed in response to the threat – including a firearms detection K9 who “conducted a sweep” of the school as an additional precautionary measure.

DCSO’s criminal investigations division investigated the threat and “based upon the information gathered and the results of the investigation” determined it was not credible.

The agency has not released any information regarding the nature of the threat, its suspected origin or who may have issued it – nor has it said whether its inquiries are ongoing.

“We will never take a threat against one of our schools lightly,” county sheriff Sam Richardson said in a statement. “When we receive information concerning the safety of our students and school staff, we act quickly, we investigate thoroughly, and we take every necessary precaution. While this threat was determined not to be credible, our response demonstrates our commitment to being proactive and doing everything within our ability to keep our schools safe.”
