The City of Liberty acknowledged Cooley’s arrest in a statement provided to FOX Carolina, emphasizing the incident was unrelated to his duties as an elected official.

“This is a personal legal matter, and the city has not and will not be involved in any way in prosecuting or influencing the case,” the city said.

Officials added that because the municipality was not involved in the matter, it could not comment on the specifics of the case – but noted Cooley “was not involved in city business at the time of the incident.”

The city also encouraged motorists to comply with South Carolina traffic laws and refrain from driving while under the influence of alcohol or any other substance capable of impairing their ability to safely operate a vehicle.
