I believe it can possibly be fixed but the problem is all you politicians go into office with good intent then quickly turn like a gallon of out of date milk. It can evidenced by how many times you, Mr Climer, voted for every fiscally liberal budget and bill while you were in the SC statehouse, bills like the Panthers bill and the Scout motors bill. Your Yes votes are calling you a hypocrite. Think about it. And now you want to do the same thing in DC that you have done in Columbia.

Keep the forever wars going, keep tariff wars that are killing the economy, keep cutting taxes for billionaires and corporations…MAGA! In the meantime who is profiting from blatant corruption since January 2025…

Sounds like another politician lying to get elected. When will voters stop listening to the talk and start examining their history, actions and prior time in office. This one is just another liar wanting a higher office.

A convention of states is about the only way I see that the national debt can ever get back under control. No offense to Climer, but hundreds of people with the same ostensible fiscal viewpoint have been elected to Congress over the last 40 years and they never produce anything. Bush, Obama, Trump, Biden, and then Trump again have had zero interest in reducing the debt. Obama & Congressional democrats increased it by more than all prior presidents combined – but Obama had 2 terms. Trump gets in and sets the record for the largest debt increase in a single 4 year term, although to be fair it was largely because of horrible advice that he got from so-called “experts” to voluntarily shut down the economy in response to covid. Republicans and democrats – they both are at fault. Only a convention of states to amend the constitution will force change, short of a full-blown financial collapse that will made the Great Depression look like Scarborough Fair. The brutal reality of the math is daunting: if we implemented a constitutional amendment that required a reduction of the debt to 1T dollars within 30 years, with no tax increases and assuming the revenue growth proportional to population growth, it would require 2.7 to 3 trillion in permanent spending cuts – roughly 45% of the national budget. There is no political will to do that. If you expanded the term of years to 50, it would still take a 37% cut. Again, no political appetite for this. And before the liberals chime in about making billionaires pay more, you could tax every billionaire at 90% of their income and it would barely move the needle.

The simple truth is politicians can’t bring themselves to stop spending other people’s money like bunch of drunken fools. The writer of this op-ed is talking a good game but the sad reality is his time in the statehouse shows he like the rest has an addiction to spending money liberally. A quick search of his voting habit in office proves it. The ONLY thing that will stop all of this, imo, is the ability of the American voters to pick better candidates and hold them accountable for each and every action. Sadly the public is too stupid and too self absorbed to do that. Climer can talk all he wants but in the end he’s full of it because he has done no different while in office. A collapse is coming and none of them care enough to try and stop it.
