Wilkins has succeeded in getting a socially conservative judge to shut down a Greenville, S.C. strip club for being a “public nuisance.” This after county sheriff’s deputies spent thousands of tax dollars on lap dances and other “attention” as part of an undercover sting operation at the facility.
Wilkins alleges that strippers at the club are engaging in prostitution – and performing sex acts on customers (and fellow strippers) inside the club.
Really? So what!
As we’ve said repeatedly, prostitution should be decriminalized in South Carolina (and all over the country). Especially in a state as dirt poor as this one. Hell … that might be one of the only skills some of our “workers” posses thanks to the Palmetto State’s worst-in-the-nation government-run school system.
But this isn’t just a debate about the laws on the books … or the economic merits of expanded liberty. It’s a debate about due process. Wilkins’ “nuisance” charge has forced this business to close its doors … without any of its employees being convicted of a crime related to the ongoing vendetta.
How on earth does that make sense?
It doesn’t … unless of course you’re the “Jesus Judge” doling out this heavy-handed edict.
“In light of both the degree and the nature of the evidence, (the club) has clearly crossed the lines it agreed to operate within and the lines that the applicable law allows,” judge Charles B. Simmons wrote in his order. “(The club) may not close its corporate eyes to the activities in its location … and then claim blindness to the act.”
Simmons, for those of you keeping score at home, is an elder at First Presbyterian Church in Greenville, S.C. In fact his church affiliation is the first thing listed on his judicial bio (after his wife and children).

I agree with decriminalization of prostitution. It’s legal in Nevada except for Clark (Las Vegas) and Washoe (Reno) counties, and there are “ranches” at the county line of each. As a matter of fact, the former head of SCDHEC Labs (Dr. Art DiSalvo) is, unless he has retired, the head of the NV Health Dept’s lab that give the “girls” their regular “checkup” to make sure they are VD-free. Not once has there been one connection made between the closing of this club and religion. Not one religious figure has been advocating closure of this club. For the interest of full disclosure, I believe Will Folks has mentioned that he attends church. It is not unusual that a bio would mention church affiliation with other personal information such as wife and kids.
There are others that might want this club closed including feminists, wives, girlfriends, local property owners and law enforcement. “Deputies said they have been called to the club 282 times since 2012 for a wide range of complaints, including armed robbery, weapons discharging and murder.”

I think it’s reasonable to deduct that the upstate of S.C. is the belt buckle of this bible belt state. Given the laser focus on social issues near and dear to the hearts of upstate residents (preoccupation with sex being one), it’s reasonable to then assume that a triad b/w law enforcement, the courts and politicians (all working in tandem to curry favor with the electorate) would try and get easy wins like this one.
