GOP Establishment Stands With Bobby Harrell

SUSPENDED SPEAKER RECEIVES FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM PARTY GROUPS

Suspended S.C. Speaker of the House Bobby Harrell is in a world of political hurt at the moment … but two key cogs in the GOP establishment are standing with him.

Both the S.C. House Republican Caucus and the Charleston County Republican Party stroked checks to the embattled legislative leader’s reelection campaign this week.

The SC House GOP sent Harrell $4,000, while the Charleston County GOP sent him $1,000. That maxes out the level of party support Harrell can receive during the current election cycle …

Sources close to Harrell say he has received numerous other offers of financial support in the wake of his indictment – including small-dollar campaign contributions as well as offers to host fundraisers from wealthy donors.

Harrell faces Democrat Mary Tinkler on November 4.

Not all “Republicans” are on board with Harrell, though.  S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley has urged him to resign, and told reporters last week

Harrell – who voluntarily stepped down from his leadership post in the wake of a nine-count public corruption indictment – has been replaced on an interim basis by S.C. Speaker Pro Tempore Jay Lucas.

In fact, multiple lawmakers tell FITS Lucas has secured the votes to replace Harrell as Speaker regardless of what happens with his criminal case.
