#SouthernCharm: Rent’s Due!

Cast member’s restaurant evicted from King Street location …

Reporter Kinsey Gidick of The (Charleston, S.C.) City Paper had a nice scoop this week related to a recurring guest cast member of Southern Charm, the Charleston, S.C.-based reality television show that’s about to begin its fifth season on Bravo TV.

According to Gidick, a federal lawsuit has been filed in U.S. District Court involving a recently shuttered restaurant owned by Southern Charm cast member John David Madison.

The restaurant – Genry Bar – was located on King Street in downtown Charleston until last week.

That’s when independent reporter Quintin Washington noticed a sign that read “Gentry Bar is moving to its new location. We look forward to serving you there.”

What happened?

According to the lawsuit, Madison owes the owner of the building – 276 King St., LLC – $163,233 in unpaid rent.  When he failed to pay, he was evicted.

“After two weeks of negotiation and nonpayment of rent for September, and having received none of the past due rent and no firm commitment as to if and when it might be delivered, landlord acted on its right to evict,” a company representative stated.

Ouch …

You can read all of the documents for yourself over at The City Paper

Obviously this isn’t the first time a restaurant project involving a Southern Charm personality has encountered difficulties.  In fact there’s an ongoing case involving a proposed downtown Charleston restaurant that never got off the ground.  That case involves Southern Charm producer Brian Kestner, who is also involved in this court case.
