AGENCY PARTNERS WITH UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA …

Juveniles at DJJ’s Birchwood School District are continuing to turn the page on their past and gain important skills in the classroom. Today is the start of a three-week program between DJJ and the University of South Carolina to bring out the best in all involved.

Youth are working with graduate students from USC to improve reading comprehension skills and enjoyment of a good book. The exercises are designed to find the best approach for each juvenile to understand and retain what he/she read.

This program is a teaching moment for both sides of the table. As the juveniles learn reading comprehension, the graduate students are learning a lesson on how to positively impact every student in a classroom, regardless of background, interests or skill set.

The partnership between USC and DJJ started eight years ago. Last year, every Birchwood student who took part in the program went on to earn his/her GED.
