The Christening Of Kensington Calhoun Ravenel

BIG DAY FOR THOMAS RAVENEL’S BEAUTIFUL BABY GIRL …

By Will Folks  ||  The cast of his hit Bravo television show Southern Charm was there … as were several of his political allies. But on this Father’s Day – his first as a dad – Thomas Ravenel wasn’t exuding the aura of a famous reality TV star or an aspiring officeholder.

“T-Rav” was just one incredibly proud dad … and with good reason.

A small group of family and friends gathered at The French Protestant (Huguenot) Church in the heart of downtown Charleston for the Christening of “Baby Kensie” – the infant daughter of Ravenel and his girlfriend/ Bravo co-star, Kathryn Calhoun Dennis.

A spitting image of her gorgeous mother, the beautiful twelve-week-old girl (Kensington Calhoun Ravenel, officially) received the sacrament of baptism at a private ceremony inside this historic place of worship in the “Holy City.”

According to Ravenel’s father – Arthur Ravenel, Jr. – the Huguenot church standing on the site today was built in 1844 at a cost of $10,000. It survived the Civil War and the great Charleston earthquake of 1888 – and now critics of Ravenel’s reality show can say it survived “Charmageddon,” too.

Of course the Huguenots – and the Ravenels – go back much further than the nineteenth century (and have endured far worse than anything contemporary critics could throw at them). Baby Kensie’s ancestors were actually among the first wave of French Protestants to arrive in Charleston in 1680 – fleeing the rapidly escalating persecution of Louis XIV.

The “Sun King” would eventually outlaw protestant churches altogether – sending nearly half a million Huguenots into exile.

Thomas Ravenel has always had a special kinship with this religious lineage … and he invoked it in some brief remarks made prior to his daughter’s Christening. Specifically, he drew attendees’ attention to the custom white ceremonial gown and pearl-and-gold bracelet she wore. Both prominently featured the Huguenot cross, which was originally patterned after the Order of the Holy Spirit insignia worn by King Henry IV.

For those of you not up to speed on your French royalty/ Reformed theological history, Henry was the first King of the House of Bourbon – and the man who granted Huguenots their religious freedom by signing the Edict of Nantes on April 13, 1598.

Anyway, here’s the cross …

kensie 004

The four arms represent the four Gospels, while the two points at the end of each arm represent the eight Beatitudes – or opening blessings issued by Jesus Christ in his famous Sermon on the Mount.

“Each arm becomes progressively broader as it leaves the center, symbolizing the believer’s transformation,” the church says.

And yes, Bravo viewers … you will be quizzed on all this at a later date (kidding, kidding).

In addition to Ravenel and Dennis, Southern Charm  cast members Cameran Eubanks, Shep Rose and Patricia Altschul attended the ceremony – which was followed by a reception at the South Battery home of Ravenel’s sister, Renee Brockinton.

Here are a few pics from the event …

I wish every news outlet would take a page out of FITS book and do a total non sequitur puff piece on a insignifcant personal matter of a friend whose who political and public relevance is obsolete beyond argument.

We shouldn’t have any problem with the puff piece on the baby’s christening- lots of outlets cover this stuff. I’m even slightly proud of FITS for omitting the now-ubiquitous “ooh, Graham better watch out for this serious challenger” nonsense. One minor beef, though; I don’t think “Baby Kensie’s descendants were actually among the first wave of French Protestants to arrive in Charleston in 1680,” though. “Ancestors,” maybe, but hopefully little “Kensie” will wait at least 20-25 years before she starts making some descendants…

Friend, this is why (most) folks remain anonymous on these sites- if the goal is political discourse without petty personal attacks wholly unrelated to the topic at hand, keeping one’s identity out of the mix helps stay on track. Not that much of the rhetoric here crawls too far above gutter or street level, but we like to think “Publius” and the Federalist, not “Hornygirl4320” the web troll…

The Colonel June 16, 2014 at 10:47 pm

You apparently don’t come here often do you Timmy? When most of us engage in fun poking hyperbole we usually do so by taking factual events and taking them to the extreme. For instance, Ms. Dennis was arrested and I believe found guilty of “minor in possession” and is known to smoke a fag now and then-hence the allusion of the infant with a “butt and a beer”. Ravenel on the other hand is a convicted coke dealer who is thirty years senior to Ms. Dennis. Additionally, he violated any number of FEC rules in his run for state office. That the “baby mommy” chooses to hang with and reproduce with a douche bag like Ravenel publicly makes her an appropriate target of scorn. Particularly since the DIQ (Douchebag In Question) continues to interject his asinine political ambitions upon those of us who enjoy poking fun at asinine politicians.

If this doesn’t make sense to you then just go screw yourself.

When youre ready to be a man and reveal yourself, Im all ears, Ill respect that…until then, take Midol.
Oh, btw Ive been known to smoke a fag or two myself albeit, my meaning and yours, Im sure, are certain to differ. With that being said, go ahead and keep insulting infants and young mothers, its probably the only opportunity you’ll ever get to play the role of “tough guy” even if it is only in your mind.

For you Hugeunot experts, not one Protestant “bible” would look anything like the Catholic Bible we have had since 384 AD had their editors not “borrowed heavily” from the Latin Vulgate promulgated by the Council of Rome. Had the Protestants relied, only, exclusively, on their copies of codices, without copy and pasting huge tracts from and and cutting entire books out from the Latin Vulgate, their “bible” would be teaching mithraism enjoined with jansenism’s pelaganism…not that it isn’t. They even cut out entire books from the Torah to support what was left of the four Gospels after their “editor” cuts, moderations, and deletions. Other than that, it is still possible to administer an illicit baptism in the belief system of the 20,000 protestant “churches” in my Lexington,SC yellowpages.

Mithraism, Jansenism and Pelagianism are all capitalized. The “Catholic Bible” of 348 you describe was actually used to suppress religious thought and restrict thoughtful consideration of dogma and theology to the learned (read the Pope and his anointed). Creeds were developed at this time so that the illiterate could learn their dogma by rote without a free thought in their otherwise empty skulls.

For the record the word baptism comes from the latin word baptism – to be overwhelmed through the Greek baptisma – to submerge. Contrary to Catholic teaching, baptism is an act of submerging, not sprinkling. The Biblically based order of the events should be belief, confession and baptism.

Stick to politics.

Slartibartfast June 17, 2014 at 1:17 am

Not wishing to be picky, but the Latin Bible was not finished being translated from the original koine Greek until 405. And St Clement and his fellows had to revise it several times because it wasn’t that good of a translation to begin with – neither from the koine, nor what Hebrew texts they had. As it turns out, the Septuagint is almost exactly, word for word an excellent translation of newly discovered, ancient Hebrew texts, the Roman Bible has had to be re translated in the 20th Century. The 1611 King James version is still the best translation, even according to the Vatican which has stolen parts wholesale for their English versions over the years, because it was translated by Cranmer’s scholars from the Septuagint and ancient Hebrew texts. Unfortunately, no one speaks Jacobean English anymore, much less Elizabethan (actually Shakespearean English is older than Liz’s). Nevertheless, the newest English versions are mostly crap.

Read Miller’s sci-fi masterpiece, A Canticle for Leibowitz for the sacramental explanation for and importance of Baptism on Holy Orders. It’s just easier to read than an exegesis.

The couple has decided to name their daughter – due in November – Remmington Sue Medlock.

“I wanted her name to be unique,” said Breanna. “I had heard the name used years ago for a little boy and thought it would be a great girl’s name. And then Remington is a gun manufacturer and I thought surely my husband would go for that. It was one of the names we were able to agree on.”
