The welfare consultant who reportedly enjoys an “especially close” relationship with S.C. Department of Social Services (SCDSS) director Lillian Koller (above) was paid much more by South Carolina taxpayers than we originally reported.

In an earlier report, FITS uncovered more than $20,000 in payments from SCDSS to consultant Sandie Hoback from February to April of this year. Additional digging has revealed $102,633 worth of payments made by the agency to Hoback from July 1, 2011 to April 30 of this year.

Hoback – who consulted with Koller during her controversial tenure as director of the Hawaii Department of Human Services – works as a “welfare consultant” for the American Institute for Full Employment.

FITS is investigating a series of scandals at SCDSS – which administers more than $2 billion in welfare payments annually. In fact we’re currently investigating allegations that Koller’s agency – which is part of Gov. Nikki Haley’s cabinet – provided the federal government with fraudulent data on its food stamp error rate.

Koller was confirmed smoothly by the S.C. Senate last February – reportedly after an Upstate Republican Senator was assured that she was not a “practicing homosexual atheist.”

Again, the rumors regarding Koller’s personal life don’t concern us … so long as she doesn’t use tax dollars to reward her “special friends” for favors.
