Sources tell FITS that former Republican lieutenant gubernatorial candidate Bill Connor may jump into the race to become the next chairman of the SCGOP. Spartanburg, S.C. public relations executive Karen Floyd announced last week that she would not seek another term, which has prompted a flood of would-be successors.

Floyd’s term ends in May of 2011.

Connor – who was defeated by S.C. Lt. Gov.-elect Ken Ard in June’s Republican runoff election – has been an outspoken fiscal conservative since he emerged on the S.C. political scene a year ago. If he decides to run, the Orangeburg attorney and Afghan War veteran would join a crowded field.

Other candidates rumored to be seeking the position are Newberry County GOP Chairman Chad Connelly, Greenville County GOP Chairman Patrick Haddon, Columbia attorney Todd Kincannon, former Spartanburg County GOP Chairman Rick Beltram, York County GOP Chairman Glenn McCall and former GOP Attorney General candidate Robert Bolchoz.
