SCDEW Exodus

Two top bureaucrats at S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley’s embattled Department of Employment and Workforce (SCDEW) resigned this week.
Michael Buchman, the agency’s director of business services, submitted his resignation on Monday. Meanwhile Dennis King – an assistant director of employment services at the agency – also resigned Monday.
The departures came on the same day FITS exposed [...]

Here’s SCDEW’s “Restructuring Plan”

We’ve written extensively recently about budget shortfalls and layoffs at S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley’s chronically mismanaged Department of Employment and Workforce (SCDEW).
For those of you unfamiliar with the Palmetto State’s ever-expanding maze of alphabet soup bureaucracies, this is the agency which doles out federal unemployment benefits … badly, at that.
(Cue boilerplate) Last year SCDEW doled [...]

SCDEW Layoffs: Bigger Than Reported?

As many as 400 employees will be laid off from the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce in the coming days, sources tell FITS. That’s nearly three times the number of layoffs confirmed by the agency earlier this week.
Of course many of the laid off employees will be able to apply for jobs at the “restructured” [...]

Another Round Of SCDEW Layoffs Coming

The S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce (SCDEW) is preparing for another round of layoffs – its third reduction in force in the last six months.
It’s unclear at this point how many jobs will be eliminated, but sources tell FITS the layoffs are focused on the information technology and labor market information sectors of the [...]

“Mommy, You Got Fired?”

We’re all for getting rid of excess bureaucracy in government. In fact we’ve proposed the elimination of entire agencies. We believe government at all levels is too big, too unruly, too corrupt and too incompetent – and the cost keeps getting passed on to taxpayers of current and future generations.
Unfortunately when government is “cut” here [...]

SCDEW “Regionalizing” Services

The S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce (SCDEW) is blaming a loss of federal funding for its decision to stop offering in-person unemployment insurance services at sixteen rural locations.
“Because of continued decreases in federal funding, DEW will regionalize some of its in-person unemployment insurance services starting Feb. 15,” an agency memo obtained by FITS reveals. [...]

“SNAP to Work,” South Carolina!

“SING FOR YOUR SUPPER?”
S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley wants a portion of the Palmetto State’s food stamp population to “sing for their supper.” Or at least that’s what she wants us to think …
Haley’s as-yet-unannounced proposal – dubbed “SNAP to Work” – would require beneficiaries of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to find jobs if [...]

Yet Another SC Agency Bans FITS

SEE NO EVIL …
The S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce (SCDEW) is the latest government agency in South Carolina to block FITSNews.com from being accessed by its employees on their state-owned computers.
Multiple sources at the agency – which is part of S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley’s cabinet – tell us FITS was blocked as part of [...]
