SC House Bans Gubernatorial Lobbying

The S.C. House of Representatives voted on Tuesday to ban taxpayer-funded lobbying in the governor’s office – putting S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley in the awkward position of having to lobby the legislature to overturn the amendment.
First, here’s the text of the amendment (sponsored by S.C. Rep. Boyd Brown) that passed the House:
SECTION 1B, Amendment 95
Rep. [...]

Boyd Brown Won’t Run Again

S.C. Rep. Boyd Brown (D-Fairfield) will not seek a third term in the S.C. House of Representatives, the 25-year-old lawmaker announced on Wednesday.
“It was a tough decision to come to,” Brown said, telling FITS that his decision to step down was motivated by his desire to pursue a law degree.
Brown made the announcement just days [...]

McConnell Slams Haley For “Rape Of The River”

When it comes to passing meaningful reform legislation, S.C. Senate President Glenn McConnell has always been, as the saying goes, as “useless as tits on a bull.”
Occasionally he’ll talk a good game, but that’s all it’s ever been – talk.
Of course when it comes to winning palace intrigues and delivering feisty rhetorical jabs at his [...]

Brown Rolls Out Ethics Reform Proposals

DEMOCRAT PUSHES TERM LIMITS, MORE DISCLOSURE,  TOUGHER ETHICS LAWS
As he said he would last fall, S.C. Rep. Boyd Brown (D-Fairfield) has rolled out an ambitious ethics reform agenda for lawmakers to consider during the 2012 session of the S.C. General Assembly.
Will the “Republican-controlled” House and Senate take up any of Brown’s proposals? Probably not … [...]

Sellers Now Giving Democratic Response

Take two, S.C. Democrats …
After a bitter internal power struggle between old and new (and black and white) factions of the South Carolina Democratic Party, S.C. Rep. Bakari Sellers has been chosen to deliver the Democratic response to S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley’s 2012 State of the State address.
Sellers (who is young and black) has been [...]

SC House Democratic Caucus Statement

Clearing the Air on the State of the State Response
COLUMBIA, S.C. – It has come to light that a prominent blogger and the Democratic Party have both released inaccurate information regarding the selection of the 2012 respondent to Governor Nikki Haley’s State of the State Address.  The voters of South Carolina deserve to know the [...]

SC Donkey Drama Escalates

S.C. House Minority Leader Harry Ott (D – St.Matthews) is waging war against an up-and-coming Democratic lawmaker and his own party chairman in an effort to protect a speaking slot that he intends to use as a springboard for his 2014 gubernatorial campaign.
In fact, Ott wants to give the Democratic response to S.C. Gov. Nikki [...]

SC Democrats Have Drama, Too

Fractured, splintered, riven, torn … all of these are words that could be used to describe the S.C. Republican establishment, which is currently in the midst of a deeply contentious internal power struggle between Tea Partiers, “values” votes and longtime partisans (one that’s playing out on the national stage, incidentally).
Of course the GOP isn’t the [...]

The State Of The State Is Gonna Be Fun

The Democratic Representative who was derisively referred to as the “Lawmaker of Five Points” by S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley last month will deliver his party’s rebuttal to her State of the State address, FITS has learned.
S.C. Rep. Boyd Brown – who was profiled in this FITS piece – will give the official Democratic response to [...]

Nikki Haley’s Middle School Musical

In the wake of a legislative whitewash of her “Savannah River Sellout,” S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley went on the offensive Thursday – alleging that Senate hearings into her recent betrayal of our state’s economic and environmental interests were nothing more than a political circus engineered by her 2010 gubernatorial opponent.
Last month, Haley’s appointees to the [...]
