“MVP” EXPOSED ON AND OFF THE FIELD …
This website has never cared much for the Carolina Panthers. They are North Carolina’s team, as far as we’re concerned. Similarly, we’ve never cared much for Cam Newton – whose 2010 national championship with the Auburn Tigers was tainted by allegations of payments made to his family.
On the other hand, we’ve long man-crushed on Denver Broncos’ quarterback Peyton Manning – whose team won Super Bowl 50 over Newton’s Panthers.
Manning’s NFL-record setting 200th career win wasn’t his most prolific offensive game … in fact the Broncos set the Super Bowl record for fewest yards gained (194) in a winning effort. Manning completed only 13 of 23 passes for 141 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.
But it was Newton’s implosion – on and off the field – that defined this game.
The brash 2015 NFL MVP – who had a career year in leading the Panthers onto the biggest stage in sports – was humbled in every sense of the word by the Broncos’ stultifying defense. Denver sacked Newton six times for 68 lost yards. They forced him to fumble twice – one that led to a defensive touchdown and another that set up the Broncos’ only offensive touchdown of the game.
Newton was also intercepted once – and finished the game completing just 18 of 41 passes for 265 yards (adding another 45 yards on six rushes).
Most damaging to his on-field reputation, he infamously opted against diving for one of his fumbled footballs – actually stepping away from the scrum.
Hurried and hit all game, Newton lost his cool in the waning moments of the fourth quarter when referees declined to call a roughing the passer penalty in the end zone following a bit hit.
After the game, things got worse …
Newton abruptly stormed out of his post-game interview after answering six questions with a total of eighteen words – giving his critics even more ammunition (although setting off a media frenzy to determine the “real reason” he walked out).
Here’s a hint: He’s a child.
We get that Newton was disappointed. Who wouldn’t be? But professionals handle their business regardless. They take ownership. They lead. Newton didn’t do that … on or off the field.
Had Denver lost this game – a distinct possibility at several points in the fourth quarter – we have no doubt Manning would have been a consummate professional about it. He would have owned his mistakes – and as such, would not have had to rely on the media to come up with conspiracy theories to explain his petulance.
He would have handled his business …
While we will never cheer for the Panthers, there is much to like about Newton – potentially. He’s got an infectious smile, his “dabs” and other post-touchdown moves tend to be genuine expressions of celebration (as opposed to taunting) and come on … who doesn’t like a guy who gives footballs to little kids?
Newton is also a truly electrifying talent … the sort of franchise player who will likely find himself on this stage again in the very near future.
Let’s hope for the sake of the game he handles himself better next time …

Hey, he plays with a lot of emotion. This is what “bummed” looks like.
Cam is talented but too full of himself. Super happy when you win and a big baby when you don’t. He needs to learn humility both in victory and defeat. He is a great person otherwise, gives a lot to charity and does nice things. There is hope for him.
Peyton really didn’t play too well either last night, by the way. What won the game for the Broncos was their defense.
Exactly, the Broncos defense was the winner. Manning wasn’t all that great.
I’ve always said there are two things that will tell just about everything you need to know about who a man really is, how he loses and how he wins. I have tried to look past the stupid “scared of me as a black QB” BS, but I had to chuckle when Doug Williams came out during the former MVP introductions.
What a tool…he also did not put his hand to his chest during the national anthem. That said something about him. The “nice” Cam may be all for the TV cameras.
Proper homage to the god of war is almost a requirement for these games.

Manning is at the end of his career, Newton is relatively speaking in QB years- at the beginning of his.

Yea, and really, the age thing doesn’t hold any water. Russel Wilson is barely older than Newton and he’s a class act. He was 26 when he lost the Superbowl to the Patriots and did he pout and storm out of his presser afterwards? No, he sat and answered all of their questions with class and dignity and even took full responsibility for throwing the interception there at the end of the game.

Newton is right where he belongs, a Quarterback in the NFL. I shudder to think of him in the Military as an Infantry Company Commander with his lack of leadership.ability.

By the end of the first quarter Cam was looking like a fish on a boat deck. You would have thought they were playing at mile high stadium the way he was gulping. Wonder if he got something wrong in his pregame ritual?
I thought they all looked like they were playing on a slip and slide during the first half. Then the announcer said both teams changed cleats, so I knew it wasn’t just me.
Yeah, that Denver defense shut down Cam and the boys. By the end of the first quarter, you could tell Carolina was in trouble.

When the Richardsons were first pitching the team to SC and NC, they sold seat licenses (or whatever they’re called) while publicizing that the stadium would be located on the SC/NC state line up near Rock Hill. Great idea, great location, fair to both states, and easy peasy parking access.
Then they “changed their mind” and all of a sudden it was announced that the stadium would be in Charlotte. Big surprise there; they probably planned it that way from the beginning once they hooked a bunch of suckers and sold a ton of seat licenses. Great for the hotel bidness in Charlotte, right?
It’s the *Charlotte* Panthers, not that name they’re using now.

In his post game presser, he didn’t whine about the officiating. (Hint: The early completion that was ruled incomplete and, incredibly, stood under review, was a game changer.) He accurately stated that the Broncos outplayed the Panthers. He gave short, succinct, accurate answers and there wasn’t a whole lot more to say. TBG, ever the contrarian, found this lack of blathering, BS, and platitudes rather refreshing.

He didn’t even stay to see the last tick of the clock, making his way to the tunnel before the clock struck zero.

As the Saints were celebrating on the field and the NFL was setting up a stage he walked to his own locker room then got up and gave his professional post game press conference. (he also personally called drew Brees that night) 2010 Petyon vs 2016 isn’t the same even though people blindly trying to compare them. Also I don’t recall Peyton talking like Superman all season, playing like Lois Lane in the game, and then crying like a bitch. He was a butt hurt little girl pouting she couldn’t dance, well Scam asked the teams to keep him out of the endzone to stop him from dancing, and when one actually did and he cried. My cousing Judge is wondering if he threw the game. He didn’t have any money on it but he noticed every lapse, oversight, mistake. He also didn’t like the half-time show or the disappointing commercials which he always watches. This game was a bummer for him. I didn’t watch any of it …..

Cam had a stellar season — after all, he was the league’s MVP. The petulant schoolboy act doesn’t reflect well upon him. He still has some growing up to do. Not diving for the fumble raises some questions for me.
