SOUTH CAROLINA MOVES TO 11-0 

The University of South Carolina men’s basketball team extended its season-opening win streak to eleven games with a workmanlike 75-61 victory over Big East foe St. John’s in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Fourth-year head coach Frank Martin‘s team – ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time in more than a decade – pulled away from the Red Storm with a grinding second half performance to remain one of only five undefeated NCAA Division I-A programs.

Coming through in the clutch for South Carolina was senior forward Michael Carrera, who grabbed thirteen rebounds and scored sixteen points – including a pair of big baskets midway through the second half while head coach Chris Mullen‘s young Red Storm squad still had designs on an upset.

Junior guard Duane Notice added twenty points off of the bench to lead all scorers.

The resurgent Gamecocks (11-0, 0-0 SEC) are off to their hottest start since 1934 … that’s right, 1934 … and a victory over Francis Marion University next Wednesday would match the program’s longest winning streak since 1996-97.

The school record for consecutive victories?  Thirty-two games … set between January 1933 and February 1934.

After next week’s tilt against FMU, South Carolina hosts Memphis on January 2 prior to beginning Southeastern Conference play on the road against Auburn on January 5.

Martin’s hot start has him over .500 as South Carolina’s head coach, but he’s just 15-39 against SEC competition through his first three seasons.

Hopefully that will turn around this season …

South Carolina’s second-ranked women’s hoops team – coming off the school’s first-ever Final Four appearance – is also undefeated.  Head coach Dawn Staley‘s team (12-0, 0-0 SEC) opens its conference slate on January 3 at home against Arkansas.

They’re an enigma, for sure. They recently beat Syracuse but also lost to NJ Tech and Incarnate Word.
