The Columbia, S.C. political advisor turned soothsayer says the Lake Murray Dam – a.k.a. the Dreher Shoals Dam or Saluda Dam – is in imminent danger of overflowing and collapsing, causing widespread death and disaster.
Is he correct? Not according to the S.C. Emergency Management Division (SCEMD).

And not according to SCANA – the utility which manages the dam.
SCEMD officials have repeatedly assured the public of the dam’s structural integrity in the aftermath of “Floodmaggedon,” – while SCANA actually says it is reducing the amount of water that’s being released into the Saluda River.
“We’ve seen a slowdown in the amount of water flowing into Lake Murray from upstream, so we are further decreasing the amount of water we are releasing as we continue to safely and effectively manage lake levels,” the utility tweeted early Tuesday.
Constructed in 1930, the 7,800-foot long, 213-foot high earthen dam was the largest of its kind in the world at the time. In 2005, a massive concrete dam and rock-fill embankment was constructed alongside the earthen dam in an effort to mitigate the potential effect of possible earthquakes.

Short of a MAJOR earthquake Dreher Shoals Dam isn’t going anywhere. Even if it did there is a secondary dam to catch it. I no idea what the actual odds of both of them failing are but it has to be very close to zero. The statistical odds on Dreher Shoals Dam (Just the original dam)failing is 1 chance in 80,000 years or something ridiculous like that.
