LABOR PARTICIPATION CONTINUES TO PLUMMET … WAGES FLAT
The federal government released a truly abysmal September 2015 jobs report this week (.pdf here), with only 142,000 new positions created and last month‘s gains pared down, too.
The 142,000 figure was 60,000 positions below the worst analyst estimates for the month, and the August estimate of 173,000 new positions was cut to 136,000.
That’s the “good news.” Ready for the bad news?
A whopping 579,000 working age Americans left the labor force last month – sending that population to a new record high of 94.6 million while sending the nation’s labor participation rate to 62.4 percent, the lowest it’s been since October 1977.

Meanwhile, average hourly wages slipped incrementally – against an anticipated increase of 0.2 percent. In addition to workers earning less, the average hourly work week slipped from 34.6 hours to 34.5 hours last month.

I guess it depends on what you are comparing it to. Yes, by Obama job production standards this is a bad report. But compared to the last few months under Bush this is a phenomenal success.
