|| By FITSNEWS || Hackers who stole 21 million Social Security numbers earlier this year also made off with an estimated 5.6 million fingerprint records. That’s more than five times the number of fingerprint records the government originally acknowledged had been stolen.
“Federal experts believe that, as of now, the ability to misuse fingerprint data is limited,” the government said in a statement, although it added “this probability could change over time as technology evolves.”
Awesome! Talk about the definition of a ticking time bomb …
Don’t worry, though. The same government that failed miserably to keep this data safe is on the case.
“An interagency working group with expertise in this area – including the FBI, DHS, DOD, and other members of the Intelligence Community – will review the potential ways adversaries could misuse fingerprint data now and in the future,” the release added.

The vast majority of victims? Those who have applied for federal background checks since 2000.
“Besides fingerprints, a trove of other confidential information was taken in the hack, which was first discovered in May,” reported Sergio Hernandez of Mashable. “The stolen information includes Social Security numbers; findings from background check interviews; information about past addresses, education and jobs; criminal and financial histories; and ‘some information regarding mental health.'”

There is also a state trooper that gave his DMV log in information to an unauthorized person. That person could then access all SC driving records, tag records, and insurance information of everyone in SC. People should be calling Leroy Smith’s office at the Department of Public Safety and wanting to know why this guy still has a job. You should also be calling the Governor’s Office wanting to know why this has been allowed to happen and why Smith still has a job after protecting this guy. There has been too many data breaches for this not to have been taken more seriously.

Maybe this explains what happened to GT. He applied for a BG check so he could become a county court clerk and deny same-sex marriage licenses to everyone except him and flip. Got his info hacked. Figures if he comments here, it will be tempting fate.

My tax info was hacked in the SCDOR fiasco, my credit card at Home Depot and the latest breach was Lancaster County Ambulance service – they stored all their records on a disc or something in a safe and it was stolen. Since I had a medical emergency last year and was taken to the hospital by ambulance, all my medical information along with personal information was stolen. There is not much new data for anyone to hack/steal about me now.
But…but…but…I thought that SLED was on top of the DOR hacking and would let those affected know the progress of the investigation and how soon the entities that hacked DOR would be brought to justice…..

What is a hacker going to do with a fingerprint anyways?
Target a DoD employee who has a high security job. Steal his/her computer or CAC card, using a 3D printer generate a rubber finger cover with the employee’s print access the secured laptop or access to a secured facility.
Or something like that.
