VICE WARS … HEATING BACK UP
|| By FITSNEWS || We’ve written repeatedly on South Carolina’s ridiculous vice war – which is most pronounced in the socially conservative Upstate (but occasionally manifests itself along the Palmetto coast).
This time its focus is South Carolina’s capital city of Columbia – where local officials have been laboring for years to get an adult bookstore to pull up its stakes.
The store – Taboo – came to Devine Street in downtown Columbia, S.C. in December of 2011. Since then, city officials have been working to run it out of town by retroactively changing zoning laws.
They believe the store is a magnet for crime.
Really?
Amazingly, they are having success with this bogus argument – as a federal court ruled in favor of the city back in March. While the legal drama plays out, though, the store is hosting adult film star Layla Price (very NSFW twitter page HERE) on August 14.
Local mainstream media is not pleased.
“Not only is the store still open in the wake of the recent court decision, staff are also gearing up for an event in just a few weeks,” WIS TV 10 (NBC – Columbia, S.C.) reported.

Government has no business interfering in private transactions involving consenting adults – so long as those transactions do not materially impose on someone else’s liberty. In fact as we’ve said repeatedly, we believe prostitution should be decriminalized in South Carolina (and all over the country, for that matter).
Our national economy is in real trouble, people … and our state economy is badly lagging behind its national and regional peers in terms of the size of its workforce and the amount of money its workers get paid.
Why our “leaders” continue to sanctimoniously (and in this case hypocritically) restrict commerce is beyond us …

The owners of Taboo are just hoping that other property owners in the area will pay them a premium to go away. It’s nothing more than extortion.
He is well within his rights, he followed zoning laws. That isn’t his fault, it’s the city’s fault.

Taboo is a barely noticeable store on a blighted corner. The site was chosen in conjunction with the city who now acts like they had nothing to do with it.
It’s the old Taco Bell, They CAN’T close it yet! This was the slowest Taco Bell in history and I know there are at least four people still sitting in the parking lot waiting on a Gordita . They’ve been there since 2002.

It’s hardly blighted these days. Plans for redevelopment were underway and he knew it. Wasn’t it a year or so back that the owner wanted the city to pay him to go away but his accounting records were such crap that he couldn’t prove damages?
While I’ll agree that Smashburger and Moe’s dress the place up a little, we’re still talking strip malls, McDonald’s, title loan stores and a self place. Taboo just isn’t that big a distraction/attraction in their current location.
I’ll also admit that, while I drive through that intersection at least a couple of times a week, I’ve not often noticed Taboo. However, I would appreciate it if they’d just remove their neon lettered marquee from Rosewood Dr.
I go through the intersection of Rosewood and Sumter Highway 2-3 times a week and rarely even notice, much less think about the place. It’s not like they have dancing penises twirling signs.

This has been going on for decades.They crack down,then let loose.In the 70’s and 80’s adult/book movie stores on two notch were a prime meeting area for gay men.By contrast,in metropolitan cities,gay bars are becoming a thing of the past..

Have you been down the corridor of Two Notch where the porn shop “This is It” is? It IS ripped up. Have you seen the stretch of Broad River road where the porn shops moved in? It, too, is becoming blighted out. In those cases, I think it has more to do with the neighborhoods that border those areas, not the porn shops. Is Taboo an eyesore? I think you’d have to be a complete moron to say it’s not. It’s a former Tacobell, that looks like a painted over Tacobell, selling a different type of Taco now. I honestly don’t see how the place stays in business, it looks dead empty 24/7. The guy is either selling enough online to keep it afloat or he’s supplementing his income.
Any crime in that area can be easily attributed to the dump of an apartment complex behind the BiLo, not Taboo. One of my favorite pastimes is pointing out shoplifters to the management in there. Doing my part to keep the prices low!
