Quoting “Steel Magnolias,” that’s how I describe political consultants. They suck – literally, like leaches, and colloquially too.
In the days since I dropped a generic, non-declarative statement to the press regarding a recent vacancy in the S.C. House of Representatives, no fewer than five consultants have contacted me. Predictably, each has been sleazy – think Danny DeVito in the role of a used-car salesman.
Before hanging up, I ask them a single question: Why should I have anything to do with anyone who would have anything to do with the likes of me?
They falter. The script hasn’t prescribed a response to this, and they lack the facility to just wing it. These are not sharp or incisive men. These are people for whom pablum is a means and also an end, people for whom the weather is a perfectly stimulating topic of conversation.
These are the people who run the people who run things.
Do you have chills, yet?
Yeah, I do mean to be kind of funny but also I kind of mean to be serious. It shocks the conscience, or it should, that there is actually a whole substratum of people who exist for the purpose of administering campaigns.
Candidates who cannot manage their own campaign budgets, for one thing, are wholly unqualified to manage the people’s budget. And candidates who cannot articulate their own philosophies should be absolutely barred from suffusing those views.
Seriously, is this even real life anymore? If I was a voting lady, I’d enact a rule: don’t vote for any person who can’t generate his own goddamn stump speech. (And then I’d be able to vote for precisely no one, so… pretty much the same position I’m in anyway.)
But back to my suitors. What drives these people?
Money, obviously. They sink their clients’ campaign accounts into the red, depleting funds in service of pushing an agenda vis-à-vis how to spend taxpayer money. They espouse solutions to the “deficit,” and meanwhile they’re often overseeing a campaign with a deficit of its own, and are themselves profiting grandly.
Most salient of all is that no one seems really to mind. Probably that’s because few people are aware of this neo-democratic f*ckery.
The other thing that drives consultants is, I guess, glory. In fact, I’m diagnosing them all as chronically co-dependent – a burning case of wind-beneath-the-wings syndrome. They are themselves humorless knots-on-a-log, with zero charm, and they can mend their shortcomings, they hope, by linking arms with someone more affable.
… A little more Don Draper, a little less Danny DeVito.
Except it doesn’t quite work, of course. So these guys – consultants – they’re always on the make, always ready to pounce. Looking for the next big thing, or at least the next new thing. Before they know it, they’re dialing up the likes of me – a consultant’s worst nightmare, to be sure, because I don’t exactly play well with others.
But they don’t care – they like lost causes, sure things, the underdog, the big dog. It doesn’t matter to them, win or lose. They still get paid, they still get to “run” something.

The duels between politicians should be held in the WB Stadium. Free attendance, and bring your own booze and smokes. Photos posed beforehand by the combatants and autographed by them at no charge (after all…???). Dueling season will be allowed only during warm weather when gals can wear skimpy, revealing outfits.
If one person is a member of the SC House and the other a member of the SC Senate then the Mace (House) and Sword (Senate) of State must be used as their dueling weapons.

Their are a handful of consultants in SC that are worth listening too. The rest are blood sucking ticks. They are paid to do the unethical, perhaps illegal, activity that the candidate won’t touch with his own hands.
They are the ones that sneak around campaign laws, make “payoffs possible by laundering the money, devise and promote the slander, liable and gossip that has become the staple of everyday political life.
If you are in politics AND not being trashed you are a do nothing politician. And the scum managing these unethical actives are called consultants.
Several of the consultants are former politicians, so that tells you something.

House Ethics Committee Chairman Kenny Bingham has lawyered up and is suing S.C. political blogger Will Folks – the scribe behind the opinionated political blog Fitsnews.
Bingham’s lawsuit is the first against Folks since launching his website in 2006, the blogger said.
The Lexington Republican lawmaker filed a libel lawsuit in Lexington County last week accusing Folks of falsely publishing in December that libertarian activist Colin Ross had filed an ethics complaint accusing him of using his position for personal gain.
State Rep. Rick Quinn, R-Lexington, told Folks no ethics complaint was filed, but the blogger wrote stories anyway that included “false and defamatory” claims, the lawsuit said.
Quinn told The Buzz that he asked Bingham, his desk mate, about the alleged ethics complaint after hearing from Folks. Bingham said no complaint was filed against him, Quinn said.
Bingham’s attorney John Parker said his client would know if a complaint was filed against him because he leads the House ethics panel.
Folks referred questions about the lawsuit to his attorney Pete Strom. The blogger has “back-up documentation” in emails and texts from Ross that supports what he published, Strom said.
The odds may be in Folks’ favor, however.
Bingham must prove Folks “either knew (the information he published) was false or had serious doubt about the accuracy of what was published, and published it anyway,” said Jay Bender, a media attorney who has represented The State.
It’s a “very high standard,” Bender said.
And if the court cannot settle the matter, Strom has another idea:
“Maybe we need to re-legalize dueling in South Carolina and let politicians and reporters fight it out on the courthouse steps.”

Was a complaint mailed in and received – not logged as required – and them simply thrown in the trash?
Like government agencies intentionally being difficult with FOIA request. Yes, saying they never got a request. Old fashion way with snail mail, take it to the post office have them give you a stamped receipt for mailing. No need for certified mail return receipt. Postal service guarantees delivery. Its an old trick attorneys sometimes do. I’ve done this before with a difficult attorney. And it worked when they said they never got a copy of my motion. Made the judge cut eyes at them. Bingham has plenty of things to overcome if he expects to win this suit. With what is at stake here, I certainly hope he doesn’t resort to the dirty unethical tactics some lawyers seem to utilize.
… Kenny is trying to establish that the complaint was never received, and figures a jury will buy that line of bullshit, and that will be the end of it.

FITS reported the complaint had been filed. He was told it was not filed, and it had not been filed. FITS published the lie anyway, in an effort to damage Bigham, knowing it was a lie.
And if he reiterated to Quinn, over the phone, the report had been filed, even though it was not, that’s slander.

Have a friend who is a so-called “poltical consultant.” He “helps” candidates by essentially skirting campaign reporting laws. For instance, the consultant spends campaign funds on whatever and wherever he wants and all that is ever reported is a payment by the candidate to the consultant. Its a way to hide who is engaging in malicious phone bank attacks, doing dirty tricks, etc. A candidate I know ran a full -blown campaign with many signs and other expenditures and all that ever showed up was payments to his “consultant.” This loophole will never be fixed as long as political consultants have power in the legislature.
I think I know exactly which candidate you are talking about. Not only did he “wash” the money through a low life consultant, but the consultant was paid a “finders fee” for recruiting the candidate and the candidate ran statewide in the 2014 republican primary without spending a penny of his own money!
Ethics commission is to dim to see what happened. He got away with it as easy as pie!
The consultant was paid $50,000 to find a candidate to run against an elected official. He found an idiot, spent a bunch of money that was never reported and laughed all the way to the bank. Even though the candidate lost and the elected official won re-election, the consultant made bank and has leverage over the people that hired him.
