This website has long maintained that tourism marketing is not a core function of government. In fact it’s just another excuse for government to take money out of the private sector and route it through wasteful, inefficient bureaucracies – solely for the benefit of select special interests.

It’s hilarious, then, that the panel tasked with holding the robbers “accountable” can’t be bothered to … you know, do their one and only job.
According to reporter Ashleigh Holland of WSAV TV 3 (NBC – Savannah, Georgia), the state’s tourism watchdog agency “by its own admission … does not check the spending by South Carolina’s 46 counties from the special tourism advertising and promotion fund.”
“No, we don’t intend to look at the money because we’ve got plenty on our plate right now,” the committee’s leader told Holland. “We, obviously we’d look at it, we’d consider it. But with all the cities and counties, it’s a big task to review all of these.”
Really?

Good question … although it appears roughly half of this committee’s members are (wait for it) … local tourism officials. And the rest represent businesses which benefit from taxpayer-subsidized tourism marketing. So that explains a lot.
Look: If it’s not doing anything (and clearly, it isn’t), then this taxpayer-funded committee should be abolished. More to the point, though, every single penny currently being spent on “tourism” in South Carolina – by any government – should be returned to taxpayers.
Seriously … state lawmakers bitch and moan about being unable to maintain our state’s roads and bridges (which is a core function of government) yet each year they pump tens of millions of dollars into “tourism marketing?” Not to mention an “oversight” committee that’s apparently too busy to do any overseeing?

Maybe we should have the oversight committee, oversight committee. This committee would provide oversight to all oversight committee in South Carolina. This would give us needed confidence that necessary oversight of oversight committees providing oversight of the legislators and voters of South Carolina. I nominate myself as executive director of the South Carolina Department of Oversight of Department Oversight (SCDODO).

Greenville County always spends a shitload on tourism and I always wonder why. It’s a nice place to live but there’s nothing to “see” here except relatives and friends. The airport car rental lots are full of dull grey sedans because their customers are businessmen.
Will the Chinese let them oversee them?
