RATES STILL DROPPING …
|| By FITSNEWS || America’s teen pregnancy, birth and abortion rates have plummeted over the last quarter century – although our country’s teen pregnancy rate remains nine times as high as teen pregnancy rates in other developed countries. And government spending related to teen childbearing still sucks up billions of dollars a year (more than $9 billion, according to the latest numbers).
According to 2013 data (the latest available) from the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, there were 26.6 births for every 1,000 women aged 15-19. That’s the lowest number on record since 1946.
By contrast, the rate was 117 births for every 1,000 women in the same age group back in 1991.
Teen abortion rates have also hit a historic low – dropping from more than forty abortions per 1,000 women aged 15-19 in 1988 to less than twenty in 2010.
What’s driving these declines? “More and better contraceptive use,” according to the Guttmacher Institute.
In fact an estimated 86 percent of high schoolers who admitted to having sexual intercourse in 2013 said they used contraception – with the number of teenage girls going on the pill climbing from 37 percent during the 2006–2008 period to 47 percent during the 2008–2010 period.
According to 2010 data, South Carolina ranked No. 9 nationally in teen pregnancies, No. 11 in teen births and No. 20 in teen abortions.
That’s not surprising seeing as states which require abstinence-only education in government-run schools tend to have … wait for it … higher teen pregnancy rates.

Please. I once lived in a mansion in one of the nicest parts of Greensboro NC. The popular award-winning Science Fiction writer Orson Scott Card was a neighbor — he’s pretty rich. I was renting a room there, since a good friend had hooked up with the ex-wife of the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, who had gotten the house in the divorce, and he talked her into giving me a very good deal. The house was a pigsty. Every room. I’m kinda messy, but my room was neat compared to the rest of the house. Three teens in the family, two of them girls. Even the hallways were littered with sneakers, dirty socks, underwear, and trash. It’s not about money, and it’s not about social class. Some people are just total pigs.

These “government-run” (no dog whistle there, for sure. Right Sic?) schools’ decision on what sex ed program to teach is determined by the local community/parents/school board. In most cases, these “deciders” would rather let their daughters get pregnant and hide their holier-than-thou heads in the sand rather than promote a pregnancy prevention program that can show some actual positive results. They will tell you, “those programs don’t reflect our community’s values” What, knocked up teenage girls reflects your community values?

The best way to reduce unplanned pregnancies and abortion is by comprehensive age-appropriate sex education and availability of effective contraception regardless of age or financial ability.
It has been proven over and over that abstinence-only programs are ineffective, while giving the option of effective contraception at no cost to the patient saves more than the cost of the contraception by avoiding future welfare and medical expense to the government.
Now if we could just convince the slut-shamers of this reality. . . .
