AS CLINTON SCANDAL UNFURLS, ONE DEMOCRATIC ALTERNATIVE HEADS TO PALMETTO STATE
|| By FITSNEWS || We recently posted an item on Jim Webb, the former U.S. Senator from Virginia whose lead political consultant paid a visit to South Carolina last week.
The purpose of his trip? To present the Palmetto State’s Democratic establishment with an alternative to former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Well guess what … since our report on these 2016 maneuverings, the yet-to-be-announced Clinton presidential campaign has been rocked by a massive scandal – one which continues to grow (and one into which “Republicans” in Congress are sinking their teeth).
Meanwhile the yet-to-be-announced Webb presidential campaign is wasting little time in pressing its advantage. In fact Webb himself will be in South Carolina next week – attending a fundraiser on behalf of S.C. House minority leader Todd Rutherford and Mia Butler, an outspoken (and usually very effective) critic of “Republican” governor Nikki Haley.
Webb’s visit will take place on Wednesday, March 18 at Pearlz Oyster Bar (936 Gervais Street) in downtown Columbia, S.C. at 5:30 p.m. EDT. The fundraiser will be closed to the public (and the press), but Webb will be holding an availability for members of the media the following morning.
“Webb will also meet with the House and Senate Democratic Caucuses and other Democratic leaders during his South Carolina trip next week,” a release announcing his visit stated.
Striking while the iron is hot …
“(Webb)’s not going to run to the left of Clinton if he decides to seek the presidency in 2016,” we noted last week. “If anything, Webb has made a name for himself as the Democrat who could lure angry white male voters to his banner – meaning his candidacy, in the event it materializes, could wind up coming at Clinton from the right.”
And if Clinton continues to drown in D.C. scandal … there may be fertile ground for him to plow whatever ideological approach he takes.
As our friend Rick Manning wrote earlier this week, Democrats have very little in the way of viable options to Clinton … whose path to the nomination seemed all but assured prior to the eruption of the email scandal (and its proximity to her crony capitalist leanings).
Will Webb emerge as one of them?
He’s clearly hoping to, that’s for sure …

He’s a conservative/not very moderate Democrat.
Vietnam era Jarhead with a Silver Star and a Navy Cross. If you look up bad ass, he’ll be included on the list of “see also”.
He has a very “Republican” view on race issues: http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052748703724104575379630952309408 However, his “stance” on race may be nothing more than the Democrat version of Atwater’s “Southern Strategy”.
Typical of many politicians, he couldn’t “keep his pecker in his pocket” and broke up his first marriage fooling around on his first wife.
He and Bush had a “falderal” about Webb’s son who was a serrving Marine – Webb couldn’t just answer the question Bush asked him about his son, he had to make a political statement. – they later had a “beer at the White House” and kissed and made up.
He might make a good candidate, he has experience (not much executive experience besides being SecNav though and he frankly sucked at that).
He’s “conservative enough” and he isn’t inclined to “lick his finger searching out the prevailing winds”, but I don’t think he can win.
