Two months after tapping his longtime policy advisor Scott English to run his Washington, D.C. office, the “Luv Gov” has hired a new press secretary.
Amy Lazenby, who broke into Palmetto politics publishing left-of-center (albeit pro-libertarian) columns here on FITS, will start as Sanford’s new spokesman on March 16. Prior to coming on board with Sanford, Lazenby managed the 2014 U.S. Senate candidacy of independent petition candidate Thomas Ravenel. Before that she did social media work and policy analysis for S.C. Senator Tom Davis and several other state lawmakers.
Lazenby will work out of Sanford’s Washington, D.C. office.
Speculation about Sanford’s political future has been swirling in recent weeks …
First, there’s a formidable potential challenger eyeing his first congressional district seat – former S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) director Catherine Templeton. There’s also speculation that Sanford has his eye on another run for governor of the Palmetto State – an office he held from 2003-2011.
Why would he do that?
Well, Sanford has more than $1 million left in his state account from his 2006 reelection campaign … and since 2013 he’s been working with Sunny Philips, one of the state’s top fundraising talents.
Sanford also reportedly told English he wanted to “put the band back together” in 2015 – a reference to re-assembling the team that got him elected governor in 2002.
But to what end?
Guess we’ll find out soon …

Yeah, really, managing Ravenel’s candidacy sounds like a sweet deal. You get paid well, don’t have to do shit, and expectations are really, really low, so no one blames you for the inevitable failure.
That’s valid logic with a few minor exceptions. I doubt she got paid *that* well, she had to deal with the fact that her candidate was an absolute buffoon (which tends to strain one’s credibility, even in SC politics), and the expectations were low precisely because everyone (well, 96.16%, anyway) knew just how moronic and ill-suited for office Ravenel would be. When you handle shit like that, it takes a long, long time to get the smell off of your hands. This is why no serious, mainstream political consultant would touch him, money or not. This is why he was forced to go out and find someone who would do it for ego, funsies, or to break into the field. Not a sweet deal in my book, but I see where you’re coming from.

It is my opinion Sanford was a good governor, not by any means loyal per se to his staff, nor his wife. He is a man of flaws, but a Governor who was capable, of making decisions, or perhaps had a better spokesperson at one time, either way he gave/gives the impression of trying to do the right thing. Some people have the ability to separate business v. Personal. Maybe it was Jenny who helped and worked behind scenes? We can speculate daily, but I prefer to judge a man by his works. It is my opinion he was a better governor than Haley, who I do admire in some respects, but she isn’t honest, it is my strong belief that has been validated by inside sources… wait for it….
She DID in fact, have an affair with WF. She is ambitious enough to “try” to destroy or marginalize anything he says or does. It is my opinion, fear brings out the worst in us.
