CULTURAL INCONSISTENCY ON OVERT SEXUALITY …
|| By LEN ANTHONY || I spent thirty years in corporate America as an in-house attorney. For the last five years of my corporate law career I was responsible for all of Progress Energy Carolinas’ legal matters, including employment law issues. The cardinal rule of employment law is all employees must be treated the same. For males, there were strict codes that prohibited sexually oriented conduct or words towards women in the workplace. Ostensibly, the same codes applied to women. However, there were countless times I was present at meetings at which women uttered words that would have resulted in a man being fired or reprimanded. Yet, no one, not even me, took any action against the women.
The women appeared to know there was a double standard and dared men to challenge it.
While that was interesting in and of itself, what I found even more interesting was hearing women criticize men for not being “gentlemen,” drinking too much, patronizing strip clubs or being overly fixated on sex. This struck me as hypocritical as I had witnessed plenty of blind drunk women, known of adult women going to male strip clubs and heard women discussing hiring male strippers for a “girls’ party.”
For some reason, it was “different” when women behaved in this matter.
I also noticed that while women claimed to be offended when viewed as sex objects or complained about men’s one-track sex minds, they wore low cut blouses, high heels, short skirts, had breast enlargement surgery, wore skin tight clothes, etc. There can only be one reason they do these things.
Now, I hear women discussing the book “Shades of Grey.” I have not read the book, however it sounds as if practically every women in the world has. Based on what I have heard women say about it and what I found when I googled “plot of Shades of Grey,” it is porn (a “romance novel” on steroids). Ironically, while writing this letter I turned on CNN and at this very moment the network is doing an article on “Shades of Grey.” They are discussing “nipple clamps” and five women are talking about the panties they are going to wear when they go to see the movie version.
It is fascinating to see how it is perfectly acceptable for women to be all enthralled with a book and movie such as this – while if a man had written this book, men would be likely stoned to death if they made as big scene about it as is the case with women.
I don’t object to women using crude language, getting drunk, showing-off their wares, or enjoying porn. I am glad they do. What I do object to is if a man does the same thing (of course, men don’t display their wares to anywhere near the same degree as women), they are scolded and criticized. My questions are: why do we men allow this double standard and more importantly, why do women want it?

Len, I totally agree with you. I have not read “Fifty Shades of Gray” and have no intention of doing so. It sounds like a boring book to me and the movie does not sound interesting, either. I do want to read a book called “50 Shades of Kale.” As someone who likes kale, it sounds far more interesting to me!. I understand it is written by a doctor who grew over fifty kinds of kale. Len, I think that some women want to be regarded as “hip, modern, and edgy” and that is why some women act like that. Many women do not value themselves and think dressing and acting ” edgy” is the only way to get attention from their peers, both male and female.

I get tired of hearing on one hand, how women are as good as men and can do anything men can do as good or better (something I happen to generally believe), yet on the other hand how they are such delicate, fragile, little flowers who need all manner of special laws, treatment, and other accomodations lest they fall completely to ruin.

“White people” were only invented in the late 18th century, you know. Partly as a way to do away with non-reservation Indians on paper, and partly as a way to maintain a strict line between darker-hued and lighter-hued individuals. By that time, the races had already become quite mixed in the colonies, due to “miscegenation” that began in the pre-colonial times, between European conquerors/settlers and native population, as well as with “free persons of color” who mostly were here originally as indentured servants before the slave trade in Indians switch over to Africans. This gave many the opportunity to “assimilate”, meaning mate with as many nordic-looking people in every generation as possible to “lighten” up them babies.

They wanted to have that distinction, but also be in a privileged class apart from the average mixed-blood Virginian. Thus they became white people, along with a majority in that state.
The rest of the states liked that and followed suit, as their leaders got to be the big cheese majority, too. It was particularly popular in the rest of the Southeast, since it was more chock-full of Euro-Indian-African muts than any other region. Most of our proud Southern ancestors, in other words. Before that, they were British, Irish, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, etc., living in America. The invention of white people gave them the status and privilege of the majority. Amazing what can be accomplished with a little legislation huh? “Paper genocide” and a permanent “master race” for our “free” Republic.
Women are still a minority, regardless of ethnicity or national origin of ancestors. Male fetuses being aborted more than female ones accounts for that, ironically enough. But they are a real minority, not one created by legislative fiat.

Thanks! I’m working on a cracked.com article about this stuff, and you’ve opened up a couple of new posibiilities for it. To me, this is an endlessly fascinating subject. In my own family, native (and possibly African) ancestry was a subject never discussed openly. But it was always there. Only in the last few years have I come to understand how all of this racial craziness came to be. And yes, I do know that there are many race-hustlers today on the “left” who exploit the hell out of the “black/white” divide. Just as there are those on the right who demonize any form or activism by the “others”, and use race as a political tool as well. It’s how the GOP won the South, after all. I have been researching my Father’s ancestry. Every branch is dirt poor share croppers back to the Civil War. Didn’t own any land or house until WW II. One family lived next to blacks that owned property and worked for the WPA. There were multiple generations and extended families in the same rented house
Still working on antebellum. But so far, I found a cooper (barrels, buckets, butter churns etc.) and a wheelright no slave owners. They lived in Sumter County which included Lee County. It had the highest (extremely high) per capita white income. $80,000 in 2000 dollars. Many many times higher than Pickens or Oconee. After the Civil War and even today Lee County is one of the poorest in the state.
Some of my ancestors in SC, though racially mixed, owned slaves. The Civil War broke them down bad. As with you, they did not recover until the middle of the next century. Early part of the century, were again classed as “colored”, prompting them to leave the state for NC. Other similar families went to GA, FL, AL, or MS. Of those who stayed behind, some chose to assimilate with a vengeance — even to the point of joining the KKK.
