KILLER GETS LIFE IN PRISON …
By FITSNEWS || A jury in Richland County, S.C. has found Hank Hawes guilty of the murder of his former lover – a case that gained statewide attention last week when one of the woman’s former boyfriends lunged at the now convicted killer in open court.
Hawes stabbed University of South Carolina professor Jennifer Wilson more than twenty times in her downtown Columbia, S.C. home in August 2011.
During testimony this week Hawes claimed he acted in self-defense – alleging Wilson had pulled a knife on him. He later claimed he did not remember stabbing her – owing to a wrist wound he self-inflicted in the aftermath of the attack.
He also at one point alleged the attack was a “psychotic episode” caused by an overdose of his adult hyperactivity disorder medication.
Hawes also claimed Wilson was a drug user, although a toxicology report after her death found no drugs in her system.
Text messages presented during the trial showed Wilson having broken off the relationship with Hawes – and Hawes attempting to reconcile.
“Can I stop by for a few minutes,” Hawes wrote in one message.
“No, we can talk on the phone,” Wilson responded.
In another exchange, Wilson asked Hawes for “time and space,” later adding prophetically “you’re killing me.”
Hawes, an insurance salesman, faces life in prison for his crime. Prosecutors had wanted the death penalty.
Friends of Wilson were grateful for the verdict – but still mourned their loss.
“She was beautiful,” one told us. “What he did to her was (expletive deleted) horrendous.”

Why not the death penalty? How long till he can get out on parole or other early release mechanism? How long until he escapes?
They did not ask for the DP. Life in SC state prisons is a pine-box sentence. He’ll be in Lee Correctional for the next several decades until he dies.

Yeah, but his victim was white. It is a known and provable fact that people who murder Blacks are far less likely to receive the death penalty than those who murder whites.

Life in Prison is too easy …. the Death Penalty helps deter future killings by others. SC is a Joke. Managed just like the Ebola situation – by a bunch of clowns.

Funny thing is, the Death penalty actually costs more per inmate sentenced than life in prison. Go figure…

The DP requires premeditation. While it probably qualifies in that regard, the prosecutors could not risk losing the conviction considering the knife, etc.
If you want to make a case for the DP then look at the Brett Parker case. Where is he anyway? He doesn’t even show up in the inmates databases???????

You should do a little research before you post. The Death Penalty in fact is not a deterrent. Look it up states without the death penalty actually have lower murder rates than do states with the death penalty. Doesn’t sound like it deters killings to me.
