U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford called off his two-year engagement with lover and “soulmate” Maria Belen Chapur on Friday. Not only that, he laid the blame for the demise of their relationship squarely on the shoulders of his ex-wife, Jenny Sanford.
In a long and rambling social media message, Sanford announced the decision – which he said was mutual – and responded to his ex-wife’s latest legal maneuverings with his, um, characteristic introspection.
Which is a nice way of saying his characteristic “over-sharing.”
“No relationship can stand forever this tension of being forced to pick between the one you love and your own son or daughter, and for this reason Belen and I have decided to call off the engagement,” Sanford wrote on his Facebook page. “Maybe there will be another chapter when waters calm with Jenny, but at this point the environment is not conducive to building anything given no one would want to be caught in the middle of what’s now happening. Belen is a remarkably wonderful woman who I have always loved and I will be forever grateful for not only the many years we have known and loved each other, but the last six very tough ones wherein she has encouraged me and silently borne its tribulations with her ever warm and kind spirit.”

Sanford and Chapur became engaged in August of 2012 – three years after Sanford dramatically confessed to their affair in a tearful press conference at the S.C. State House. That admission prompted an investigation into Sanford’s travel practices that nearly led to his impeachment in 2010 – and ruined his presidential aspirations for 2012.
Jenny Sanford publicly exited the Governor’s Mansion (with the couple’s four children) after attempts at reconciling her the marriage proved fruitless. She filed for divorce in December 2009, which the governor declined to contest.
Nine months after proposing to Chapur, though, Sanford pulled off a remarkable political comeback by winning a special election to the state’s first congressional district – the seat he held from 1995-2001.
Speculation immediately swirled about the “Luv Gov’s” motivations …
“Is this a move trying to make Jenny look like a horrid b*tch or this more about him wanting out of his relationship with Belen?” one of our top readers of tea leaves speculated.
Meanwhile the former First Lady’s lawyer, Marie-Louise Ramsdale, blasted Sanford for being a hypocrite.
“(Jenny Sanford) has always put their children first and will always stand up for the boys’ best interests and safety,” Ramsdale said. “Mr. Sanford’s Facebook post directly contradicts his filing in court today – before he posted on Facebook – wherein he requested a gag order regarding this case for, as he stated, ‘the protection of our sons.’ Apparently, he only wants a gag order after he has publicly laid out his position and disparaged my client – what he claimed she would do to him.”

That’s the old school way in the Charleston family court. In fact, since many judges rotate, we might as well include the rest of South Carolina. However, its not on course much with modern times regardless of anything one might could assert to the contrary. And yes, one has to consider fees and the court’s time. But you do not win cases by always being passive while attempting to deflect. You are suppose to represent your client(s) with vigor – deflect AND attack. (See Rules of Professional Conduct).
