Thomas Ravenel: Lindsey Graham’s “Double Jeopardy” On Obamacare

Edisto, S.C. – In light of this week’s U.S. Court of Appeals ruling on Obamacare, Lowcountry businessman and independent U.S. Senate candidate Thomas Ravenel issued the following statement regarding incumbent “Republican” Lindsey Graham’s tortured stance regarding this legislation:

“The U.S. Court of Appeals has correctly ruled that Obamacare cannot impose taxes or disburse subsidies in two-thirds of the states,” Ravenel said.  “This frees more than eight million Americans from the law’s oppressive individual mandate – and blocks for the moment what would have been a $700 billion tax hike.”

Ravenel said the only reason the court has to take up the law is “Republican” lawmakers like Graham lacked the “stones” to defund it.

“Lindsey Graham had a chance to get rid of Obamacare altogether – but he folded like a cheap suit,” Ravenel added.  “Tim Scott refused to vote for a budget that funded Obamacare, but Lindsey Graham joined Harry Reid and John McCain in supporting it.”

(See roll call vote HERE).

“Not only that, Lindsey Graham was one of only five so-called ‘Republican’ Senators who confirmed both Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan – two liberal Supreme Court Justices who will ultimately decide whether to uphold or strike down this ruling,” Ravenel said.  “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – give me forty-one votes and I would still be filibustering those nominees.”

(See roll call votes HERE and HERE).

“Lindsey Graham opposes Obamacare like a moth opposes a flame,” Ravenel concluded.  “But the taxpayers are the ones getting burned.  Make no mistake: If the Supreme Court permits this $700 billion tax hike to move forward, South Carolinians will have no one to blame for it but Lindsey Graham.”

Say what you will about the Cokehead, but if he continues to simply restate Ms. Lindsey’s record, it’s not going to be a fun cycle for Twinkle Toes even if he wins.

1) It’s political malpractice for a renowned horndog like Ravenel to use the word “stones” publicly; 2) if SC voters were dumb enough to believe “Defund Obamacare” could have worked, Graham would have lost his primary; 3) from time immemorial, SCOTUS picks have been almost totally presidential prerogatives, something the genius historian T-Rav knows full well; 4) any well-run campaign would fire its spokesperv/ghostwriter for this embarrassing chestnut: “Lindsey Graham opposes Obamacare like a moth opposes a flame.”

What in the actual fuck does “opposing Obamacare like a moth opposes a flame” even mean?

Reply
K.Mann August 7, 2014 at 1:16 pm

That obviously is sarcasm. Moths are drawn to flames and flit around them the way Sen. Graham flits across the aisle to support Democratic initiatives.
What really needs clarification is “political malpractice”. That expression makes no freaking sense whatsoever.

“from time immemorial SCOTUS pick have been almost totally presidential prerogatives.” Remember Judge Bork ??? Remember the trouble Judge Thomas had. It is not unheard of to stand up and say : NO. Like Sen. DeMint did.

Senator DeMint actually stood for something. His legacy is Cruz, Rand Paul, Mike Lee and our REAL senator Tim Scott. When we add a few more in 14 it will be a start in the right direction.

I guess standing for nothing equates in your mind as standing for something. Remind me again of all his authored legislation that passed.

K.Mann August 7, 2014 at 1:20 pm

Sen. Graham has had a grand total of one of his sponsored bills pass in the Senate in 12 years… and it was a non-controversial fluff bill concerning the Charleston naval base.
That’s really something to brag about.

Reply

No, *grown-up* Republicans knew that. Temper tantrums have their place in the Senate, but you can’t throw one every freaking time something doesn’t go your way or you’ll look like some half-drunk, immature, petulant, spoiled dumbass. Uhhhh, wait a minute…

Reply
K.Mann August 7, 2014 at 1:32 pm

Defunding is a legitimate tool (though not often successful) and is exactly what Sen. Graham proposed using — even*prior to* its attempted use against Obamacare/ACA, in fact, even before Ted Cruz was ever elected to the U.S. Senate — against the National Labor Relations Board. His master plan to punish the NLRB had even less support that the Obamacare/ACA defunding effort (with a total of 0 supporters) so I supposed you can consider him a half-drunk, immature, petulant, spoiled dumbass *prototype”.

No, Ravenel’s just a half-drunk, immature, petulant, spoiled dumbass. No one here wrote anything to indicate that defunding wasn’t a legitimate tactic or power available to the Congress. Read carefully and you’ll see that we were saying that Reps and Senators often vote a certain way because the outcome is a fait accompli, and some other deal based upon the vote is of more value. Conversely, Reps and Senators may choose to ride a loser vote right into a smoking hole for the sake of optics, which usually means the PR value outweighs whatever deals could be made behind the scenes. That’s just the way legislative bodies work. Members of Congress can pitch defunding temper tantrums all they like, they should simply choose the right tantrums (deals, optics, or actual defunding), that’s all.

K.Mann August 7, 2014 at 1:59 pm

There is nothing dishonest about fathering a child unless a man lies and denies being the father. But Ravenel is very happy to both claim and support his baby daughter (cf. Sen Strom Thurmond, who did not.) Similarly, there is nothing inherently dishonest about a DUI, unless you deny it ever happened and have it quietly expunged from your record (cf. Pres. G.W. Bush). And the only reason that Thomas Ravenel was convicted for his drug use, while none of the last three presidents or innumerable legislators who’ve indulged in this vice have been convicted, is because Ravenel fessed up and was honest with the police whereas the others kept quiet.
So please — you who are not even honest & forthright about your name — try climbing off your high horse. Or better yet, stop hiding behind an alias.

I have spoken to hundreds in Charleston who have found over the years that it is useless to contact Graham on views on legislation or court nominations; he invariably votes the way HE wants, and ignores the input from his constituents.

Every time I have contacted Graham’s office I get this silly form letter telling me he is going to what ever he pleases and I can Kiss off. Something to that effect any way. He only listens to the check writers. The bigger the check the more at tentative he is. Every day folks don’t count. But if enough every day folks will wise up and vote him out maybe he will get the message.

Next to worst, then, is our apparent future of a meaningless bunch of silly babble from TR every time one of his Goggle alerts goes off on an LG topic. I think the next three months or so will be much harder on FITS readers than on Graham.

You are still out of touch with the real world. Sad … very sad, indeed. I will give you a clue. Maybe if you read case law . .errr … checked domestic related website pertinent to children and motherless/fatherless children in the USA? But then, you are old school. Closed minds are blind, like yours – old man. Yes, sad for you. But then, many live in a shell. They create their own world inside their head, when the real revolves unknowingly around them by their own choice. Liberal, are you?

CNSYD July 24, 2014 at 9:31 am

“motherless/fatherless children” What are they, test tube babies? They had one of each. And what pearls of wisdom does the “web site” you spout provide? Bastards are bastards. You can try but you can’t white wash it. Old school – work, marry before you have children, save your money, pay your bills, obey the law, etc. Yes that is “old school”. I guess your “new world order” is defined by total irresponsibility.

RogueElephant July 23, 2014 at 9:38 pm

” All Ms Lindsey has is a drug conviction.”For which T-Rav has” paid his debt to society” and deserves a second chance to do the right thing. The right thing being beat the $hit out of Grhamnasty. If Graham had joined the other REAL Republicans in voting NO on cloture they wouldn’t have gotten the 60 votes needed. But he sold US out again and then had the nerve to vote NO on the bill when they only needed a simple majority, which we would have lost any way. Nothing but a lying liberal would be that two faced. But he got away with it in the primary. Let’s show him up for what he is in the general.
