SC: The KKK Is Back
GROUP TELLS PALMETTO UPSTATE “IF IT AIN’T WHITE, IT AIN’T RIGHT”
The modern version of the Ku Klux Klan is actively recruiting new members in the South Carolina Upstate – leaving bags of candy on citizens’ driveways along with literature urging them to “Save Our Lands – Join The Klan.”
The efforts are part of the Klan’s “national night ride,” a thrice-annual coordinated recruiting blitz.
The KKK has undergone various iterations since its establishment in Tennessee in 1865. Initially a paramilitary vigilante group, the first Klansmen waged asymmetrical warfare on freed blacks (and white Republicans) – helping overthrow the Reconstruction-era governments in the south and replacing them with white Democratic segregationists.
The second Klan? Formed in 1915 in Georgia, this staunchly anti-Catholic, anti-immigrant organization employed modern recruitment techniques and had swelled to more than four million members by the early 1920s. The Klan’s presence wasn’t confined to the south, either, with Indiana boasting a large and visible Klan population (a Klansman was even elected governor in 1924).
The third and “modern” iteration of the Klan emerged in the 1950s in response to the American civil rights movement. Though far less organized than its predecessors, independent groups operating under the Klan banner participated in dozens of bombings and political assassinations aimed at blocking integration in the south.
The most recent Klan recruitment efforts coincide with a renewed national focus on immigration.
“Illegal immigration is destroying America,” a Klan voicemail proclaims, telling listeners to “always remember if it ain’t white, it ain’t right. White power.”
Talk about never letting a crisis go to waste …
This website respects the right of the KKK to organize, mobilize and spread its political message – however we repudiate that hateful message as well as those who advance it (just as we repudiate any organization which exists to advance discrimination along racial lines).
America isn’t being destroyed by illegal immigration, it’s being destroyed by an overbearing, overtaxing, over-spending, over-regulating and over-intrusive network of governments that are collectively choking off prosperity and individual liberty for all people .
Of course that’s not going to stop some of our lowest common denominators from exploiting the current climate of fear.
“People need a bogeyman,” we wrote earlier this week in reference to the immigration debate. “They need someone to blame for their lot in life. That’s why we have the stereotypes.”
Sad. In the fight to reclaim our economic opportunities and our most fundamental freedoms it is ludicrous – we repeat, ludicrous - to engaged in discriminatory behavior against anyone .
We’re all in this together. Or at least we should be …
