THE PALMETTO STATE HAS AN “AUTOCOMPLETE” PROBLEM

“Why is South Carolina so …”

Can you finish that sentence? If not, your computer, tablet or smart phone can …  you just may not like answer.

In addition to its many other problems (low incomes, record low labor participation, crappy government-run schools, corrupt politicians, etc.), it turns out South Carolina also has an autocomplete problem.

In other words when people go to web browsers, search engines, data query tools, etc., and type in “Why is South Carolina so …” they get several less-than-flattering adjectives by way of responses. And since this autocomplete function is based on what users all across the country are typing into their computers, tablets and smart phones … well … you see the problem.

At the request of one of our longtime readers/ frequent contributors, we decided to give this theory a try.

Why are Yankees so damn rude?

I prefer the fact that Yankees are rude to my face. Many Southerners feign good manners but are utterly diabolical in their under-the-table behavior.

Blair Pettrey May 15, 2014 at 10:31 am

It all goes back to that ‘blessed her heart’ – how true it is. The ultimate words of the south – are the most rude & painful.

it is always “bless your heart”

as for “ultimate words of the South – are the most rude @ painful”

I would disagree
My top five are:
New York – fuck off
New Jersey – fuck you
Philadelphia – you fuck
Massachusetts – go fuck yourself
New Mexico – Gringo quieres follar mi hermana

Of course I can’t find it now – however; I remember once seeing a survey done that the 5 top states (and I apologize, as a “ex”(?) Marylander – I only paid attention to Maryland)… I digress. The 5 top curse word using states – Maryland was #2 or 3- and top 5 friendly – Maryland also ranked.. Wha!? And perhaps you’re right. And LOL @NewMexico.

Sandi Morals May 15, 2014 at 10:47 am

I have found southerners to be delightful people that most often are not only engaging and honest but also would you the shirt off their back if you needed one.
A ‘yankee’ would give you the shirt BUT charge you for it!
If you people can’t appreciate the beauty and culture of the Carolina’s, I feel sorry for you. How can so many of you live in Charleston,MB or the Low Country and be such miserable, bitching nags and hags?

As a semi-southner (I’m a born & bred West-By God Virginian by birth & upbringing) I was treated more rudely by a bitchy old woman working at Belks at the Westgate Mall in Spartanburg than I have EVER been treated in New York City,LA, Paris, France, Leeds, England, Taigu, Korea,Tel Aviv, Sigonella,Sicily, Seattle Wa or anywhere else in the world.that Uncle Sugar sent me to (well maybe Fayetteville come to think of it – but that is still the “friendly” South)

Let alone most locals of Grrrrr, SC

I’ve encountered more ignorant self-centered assholes in South Carolina than I have in any other part of the country – that’s for sure

SenseLikeChaps May 16, 2014 at 1:03 pm

No. The underlying issue isn’t racism any more than the cost of Valtrex is an underlying issue of herpes. It’s a symptom, not the disease. The issue is a cycle of disenfranchisement that generates a whole list of self-fulfilling prophecies.

The correct answer is George W. Bush.

The Colonel May 15, 2014 at 1:17 pm

Uh, yeah, Bush had a little help with that Skippy. The current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania avenue has doubled down on old George’s efforts taking us from nine trillion in debt to seventeen trillion while allowing Syria to explode, the Ukraine to implode, Iraq to fall back into chaos. Meanwhile China continues to exert dominance in the Pacific despite our shift to that theater.

SCBlues May 15, 2014 at 3:47 pm

Senator Obama voted against funding the Iraq war – twice.

The Colonel May 15, 2014 at 5:40 pm

And could have ended all of them at any time in the last six years. Remember, the drawdown in Iraq was well underway when President Obama took office.

euwe max May 15, 2014 at 5:45 pm

The drawdown was to save Bush the disgrace of having his successor do it – by the time he reversed his “cut and run” dogma, he was well aware that whoever succeeded him would end the war based on lies.

The Colonel May 15, 2014 at 7:19 pm

Whatever, the draw down planning was well underway long before the election, Obama was a “who is he” candidate at that point and McCain would have continued to press the war.

euwe max May 15, 2014 at 9:24 pm

October 16, 2008? Obama was much more than “who is he”.

SCBlues May 15, 2014 at 10:13 pm

Some folks will never, ever give President Obama any respect. From the get-go he has been disrespected over and over and over again – in a way that I have never seen a POTUS disrespected in my lifetime. Some folks are proud that Joe Wilson disrespected the President of the United States giving the State of the Union speech – that ought to pretty much tell you all you need to know.

Sandi Morals May 15, 2014 at 10:28 pm

Anwar Sadat was a ‘closet’ Christian. Obama is a ‘closet’ muslim that supports the muslim brotherhood and radical groups like CAIR.

Obamacare made it impossible for middle America to ignore Obama’s background and lies. They no longer trust him. Just that simple.

The Colonel May 15, 2014 at 10:31 pm

Almost every incumbent in elective office along the corridor, including the congressman from the 6th district that represents those good folks, is a democrat. They continue to elect local leaders who don’t lead them anywhere but to the status quo.

SCBlues May 16, 2014 at 7:59 am

Thank you for your service but you do not have a clue . . . Republicans at the state level control funding for education – not elected leaders at the local level. No surprise that much of the corridor is predominantly black and poor. You can post on here a zillion times that it is the Democrats that are at fault but it won’t make it true. You post with such authority on here but know nothing of what you post.

The Colonel May 16, 2014 at 8:13 am

I have a far better clue as to how finding for education in this state doesn’t work than you do my friend. Here’s just one example of the issues at hand, https://www.fitsnews.com/2013/09/05/sled-sitting-on-major-public-education-scandal/ The board is elected by the community and the board hires the superintendent. The portion of funding that comes from the State has been controlled by democrats for all but the last 15 or so years. The lawyer that has represented the corridor for many years is nothing but a shill for big gubamint control and more money. Money isn’t the issue.

SCBlues May 16, 2014 at 6:48 pm

People ask me if SC is as bad as they hear on the news and I have to say ‘mostly’. Much the same here. I think South Carolinians are, in the type specimen, among the most naturally and genuinely friendly anyone could find, and generally helpful and honest to boot. People here smile at each other.

But when we pass to the state on an organizational level, well then we pass to other reasons.
.
Mencken, when asked in the early 1920s when he was at his prime why did he not move to Europe as did so many other gifted Americans (e.g., Hemmingway) he answered at length (see part in link below) but with a summary regarding the inexpensive non-stop never-ending sideshow provided by American culture, quoted here:

“Here in this Eden of clowns, with the highest rewards of clowning theoretically open to every poor boy — here in the very citadel of democracy we found and cherish a clown dynasty!” — A show unmatched at any price!

Hell, I stay here for Gamecocks football/baseball and mustard-based BBQ.

The Colonel May 15, 2014 at 8:30 pm

Of course there’s the Gamecocks, BBQ, Mr Friendly’s, 82 Queen, Shem’s Creek, North Myrtle, Table Rock, Georgetown, Lake Jocassee, the Chatooga, Darlington, the five minute TSA lines at CAE, Little River, Pawleys (the island and the hamburger joint), Beaufort…

sparklecity May 17, 2014 at 11:27 pm

Everyone of those coastal South Carolina environs pale compared to the Outer Banks of North Carolina and throw in Beaufort (the REAL one in North Carolina = BO-Fort)

South Carolina BBQ ain’t nothing to brag about. I’ve had better BBQ in Madison Wisconsin believe it or not (let alone in North Carolina) REAL BBQ does NOT require drowning it in mustard based sauce.

Shem’s Creek???? – Give me a fucking break = overpriced and overrated “local” seafood shipped in daily from Vietnam!!!!!. Mount Pleasant used to be nice but is totally “pimped out” now.

Darlington??? That hot flat-assed shit-hole??? Just up the road from Florence (the false teeth capital of South Carolina)??? Yep, that’s the place for me fer sure!!!!!

Pip-squeek Cesar’s Head & Jocassee pale to North Carolina’s Pisgah Forest or the Cascades of Washington state.

There ain’t nothing in South Carolina that you can’t find in better environs in Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia(what ain’t stripped mined I admit) let alone California or Florida or the rocky coast line of Maine or St. John’s Newfoundland (with about 99.9% less trash littering the roadsides I might add…)

Gamecocks??? If that is what floats your boat, help yourself.
I could give a rats ass about either the Tigers or Chickens. I don’t lose a second of sleep over either one (or any college team for that matter).

Gotta admit I agree with one thing though that “too big/too small’ saying rings truer with each passing day!!!!!

sparklecity May 17, 2014 at 10:38 pm

You ain’t the only one who has lived all over this blessed United States and the world.

I consider myself an American first, a Hillbilly second and work and live in the Carolinas (for the time being) because that is where I make good money taking care of polluted fuck-ups here in South Carolina because no one here can do the job as good as my company can.

Uncle Sugar is shitting me a check each month for my 25 years of service above and beyond what i make on the outside but I sure as hell ain’t retiring here.

I ain’t saying where I’m going to retire but is sure as hell won’t be here in South Carolina. The older I get the more I hate humidity so I’m leaning to a less humid environment.

it is an OK state but it sure as hell ain’t the center of the universe. There are good people in every state in the union but from what I’ve encountered, this state has more than its fair share of know-it all assholes.

Must be some inferiority complex due to lack of natural resources and having to whore itself out the best way it can since the 1900’s when the mills moved into the Upstate and there was nothing between the Upstate and Charleston but a big void (still is as far as I’m concerned).

Since the late 1970’s when the mills started to close the pimping of South Carolina has only increased.

The Colonel May 17, 2014 at 10:50 pm

California is the capital of the “know it all asshole”. I concur on the humidity issue though, I’ll be headed to the NW corner of the state in 8-9 years. Where did you get the idea that we have no natural resources? We have an abundancendance of gold, time, sand, granites

sparklecity May 18, 2014 at 12:35 am

I know all about that “mine” in the middle of the state. I’m just hope I’m not retired when that thing goes tits up and I make a bundle in cleaning up the environmental mess that it will leave when the investors pull out and leave South Carolina holding the bag like you know they will.

I’m not talking about agriculture(although I do know that SC is only behind California in the production of peaches and Upstate peaches are just the BEST – the strawberries in GSP are pretty sour this year however),

I’m talking about carbon-based shit that REALLY brings in the cash.

You know Oil,natural gas,even coal???

I can guarantee you that if there was coal under Glassy Mountain that world class golf course would have been stripped mined just like the rape that has happened in West Virginia,Kentucky and southwest Virginia since the 1960’s

My folks were in Charleston (my departed Dad became a construction worker after he got his “20” in the union mines) during Hugo and experienced that famous “Southern Charm” at $20/bag of ice.

3 weeks later My wife and I were in San Francisco at an engineering conference when the earthquake hit and not one person fucked us over as much a a dime. We are survivors of that earthquake and I will never forget the good will of the people of San Francisco. I’ll take them over Charleston any day.

I’m not a city boy but IF I could I would live in San Francisco or somewhere else in northern California or Monterey I would. Depending on how this gold mining thing around Sumter “pans” out, maybe I can after all!!!!!

Don’t think coming to the Upstate will relieve the humidity. It is not as bad as the Low Country/Columbia but as I posted, it is too humid for my liking here. Especially since I hit my late 50’s. It gets worse every year to me. Even up here.

You know how it is, the older you get, the “old home place” pull gets stronger and with climate change, the winters ‘back home” are nowhere as near as bad as they used to be and housing is cheaper than here. But then again, Arizona,Utah,Idaho or Nevada ain’t bad places to retire either if avoiding humidity is what you are looking for.

<60 miles from a military base would be a plus too and there are a shitload in Arizona.

To pretend that it’s unique to South Carolina is very naive. You sound like a college student, by the way, who isn’t wise enough to know any better.

In what utopia do you now live, if I may ask?

Original Good Old Boy May 15, 2014 at 4:12 pm

So I can assume you are a college student? Or a waiter or waitress, perhaps? Nothing wrong with that; just that you might need a little perspective.
And I can assume that you don’t want to reveal the utopia in which you currently reside because you know people can and will point out that your current residence has its downfalls too?

happy May 15, 2014 at 4:50 pm

lol. I’m enjoying your speculation about my age and occupation (way off, by the way). I never said it’s perfect where I now reside, but compared to SC it’s damn near close. You can try and attack the messenger, but it’s undeniable that SC sits near the bottom of every category we use to measure how well the people of a state are doing; education, wages, health, government, etc. When your unofficial state motto is “Thank god for Mississippi” you know things aren’t good.

Original Good Old Boy May 15, 2014 at 5:43 pm

Why are you afraid to tell us where you live? Because we might point out that that place is “plain sucky” too?

“NYT Best Non-Seller”

“You won’t be able to put this book down, mostly because you can’t pick it up.”

“Why hasn’t my doorstop arrived yet?”

Really, it’s not too hard, White SC folks hate SC Black folks. What’s the problem ?

There are at least four South Carolinas, and maybe seven. The four are, in no particular order, Lowcountry, Beach, Midlands, Upstate. There are those who swear that the Santee, Catawba are separate, and divide the Lowcountry somewhere between Charleston and Beaufort (I divide it along a line where the boohag shutter colors turn from green to blue.) Some say Daufuski Island and Charleston are their own countries. Some say that about Harbor Island and Irmo. There are even people who will bet their family fortune that Anderson and Spartanburg are so different, you can grow old naming them. And, of course, there’s always Ceasar’s Head, Lone Star, Camden, and “South Charlotte.” (How many is that, now?)

Our young people, black and white, have gotten over themselves. Yes, there are still bigots, but there are bigots in every state, just as vile and stupid – and they are not long for this world. But the history of SC has always been one of tolerance, except for people with large amounts of melanin in their skin – Jews, Roman Catholics, Arabs, Mormons, East Indians, Amerinds, ALL were welcome. Now, ALL are welcome. Yes, even gays – although most people don’t want any PDA rubbed in their faces, hetero or gay. we’re not perfect, but we’re getting better every day.

We pay less, but things cost much less. And so on and so forth.

My point is this – If you want to hate my State, there are a lot of different places on which to grind your vengeance. If you love my state, then you are a most tolerant person as you have a veritable smorgasbord of cultures, dialects, and politics. And we’re getting better..

Damn! Outstanding! Thank you for this contribution tonight. You certainly made your ‘State’ proud with your thoughts tonight.
Well done!
