Richland County (S.C.) Sheriff Leon Lott obtained and executed a search warrant against a Columbia, S.C. man because the individual “disrespected” his office on social media.
“I received copies of online posts from a concerned citizen showing what appears to be marijuana cigarettes and someone disrespecting the Department,” Lott told his bought-and-paid-for public relations firm (a.k.a. The State newspaper of Columbia, S.C.).
Really, dude? Really?
What nefarious activity did Lott uncover? According to The State, he was forwarded (GASP!) pictures of a 30-year-old Columbia, S.C. man sitting in his own home – smoking pot and flipping the bird to a picture of Lott posted online.

Rather than laugh this incident off, though, Lott decided it was worth wasting taxpayer resources to identity this individual, obtain a warrant for his home and arrest him and his girlfriend.
Unbelievable. And we pay to give this guy aerial drones and a friggin’ tank?
This is the second time in the last few months that a South Carolina lawman has targeted marijuana users because of what they post on social media.

Sounds illegal to me. But not surprised, he has been riding the taxpayers wallet for a long long time. Check out his PERKS from the Sheriffs departments, such as special retirement, credit card usage that is buried in the budget, essentially unlimited travel (again buried in the budget). Some day, a reporter will actually do some research and put this guy away.

I believe that the first downfall to society is when you have a total lack of respect for the law. Lott did the right thing! Maybe we should take a hard look at ourself if we feel he was wrong. Regardless how significant this event is, it does make us all take note as to our actions in society. If this person does not want the law at his his doorstep, then don’t commit actions against the law. Forest Gump said it the best, “Stupid is as stupid does.”
A deeper problem is when the “law” doesn’t respect an individual’s liberty and right to expression. Who exactly was victimized by said idiot smoking a joint and flipping the bird? Looks like the only victim was Leon’s oversized ego.

Just curious, Mike. If it’s only a rolled joint, it might be a cigarette. Is that enough probable cause for a warrant? Probably for most SC judges, but I don’t think it should be.
I know a guy that only smokes hand rolled cigarettes, took me about a year to get used to him lighting them up and not immediately thinking it was a joint.
It’s probably not a good idea to smoke them while driving — lest he wants dirty looks from the soccer moms; approving honks from the truckers; and blue lights from the jackboots.
Probable cause is a relatively low level of info, but a picture of what *appears* to be a marijuana cigarette is pretty weak PC in and of itself. I don’t anything about the particulars of this case so I won’t speculate, but i would think that to be safe they developed some other (additional) PC; something like a buy or two, surveillance, a dope-involved criminal history, etc. Would it work on its own? Probably, but I sure wouldn’t want to work that case or prosecute it…

Interesting that this agency would tie up so many resources rounding up a pot smoker and his girlfriend, but when CPD walks by marijuana and paraphernalia in plain view at a certain 5 Points Association members house they do nothing. Let’s not forget the Michael Phelps investigation that seemed to be a really nagging issue with Sheriff Lott. To be such a blue blood, he sure is tough on a little personal marijuana use.
