COLUMBIA, S.C. (January 16, 2014) – The University of South Carolina Board of Trustees has approved raises and one-year contract extensions for head football coach Steve Spurrier and all nine of his assistant coaches, it was announced today.

Coach Spurrier’s contract extension keeps the Head Ball Coach in charge of the Gamecock football program through the 2018 season. Additionally, Coach Spurrier had a clause added to his contract that upon his retirement as head football coach, he would be offered employment by the University as a Special Assistant to the President and the Athletics Director provided he maintains his residence in Columbia and either the current President or the current Athletics Director continue to be employed by the University in their same capacities.

“Our sustained success has put our football program on a level that few others in the country have accomplished,” said Athletics Director Ray Tanner. “We are coming off our third-consecutive 11-win season, which represents the greatest era of success in Carolina football history. In addition, our student-athletes are achieving at the highest level – on the field, in the classroom and in the community. With three-straight Top-10 finishes, South Carolina is as good as any program in the country. The contract raises and extensions for Coach Spurrier and his staff are a reflection of that success and are well-deserved.”

With the exception of defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward, all of the assistant coaches, including Deke Adams, Kirk Botkin, Grady Brown, Shawn Elliott, G.A. Mangus, Joe Robinson, Everette Sands and Steve Spurrier Jr., have had their contacts extended through the 2015 season. Coach Ward’s three-year deal now extends through 2016.

My staff and I thoroughly enjoy coaching under the direction of President Pastides and Athletics Director Tanner,” said Coach Spurrier. “We appreciate the attitude of our Board of Trustees in keeping our salaries competitive with the rest of the SEC. We all hope to coach here many more years and we still have some goals that have not been accomplished yet.

“We thank our fans for the outstanding support that we always receive,” continued the Head Ball Coach. “A special thanks to all the fans that followed our team to Orlando for the big win over Wisconsin that enabled us to finish a school-record No. 4 in the nation.”

The Gamecocks finished the 2013 campaign with an 11-2 record and ranked fourth in both the Associated Press and the USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ polls. It marked the highest postseason ranking in school history. The Gamecocks posted three wins over teams that finished in the Top-10 (Missouri, Clemson and UCF), five wins over Top-25 squads (Missouri, Clemson, UCF, Wisconsin, Vanderbilt) and six wins over teams that won bowl games (Missouri, Clemson, UCF, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State and North Carolina). The 2013 senior class posted the most wins (42) in a four-year period in school history. The season culminated with a 34-24 win over Wisconsin in the Capital One Bowl.

And: (to make matters worse in the Upstate) I just read this on SDS: The Vandy job: “Clemson OC Chad Morris is very much in the picture and very interested.”….

Uh Oh….If Morris leaves, no matter who stays at Clemson, they will be in trouble…

Charlie Cat January 16, 2014 at 12:59 pm

What an ACC coach considering an SEC School. How interesting?

Reply
GrandTango January 16, 2014 at 1:18 pm

I agree. most of em are scared of the SEC. I doubt Dabo wants any part as a coach in the SEC. If Morris really has confidence in his skills, he’ll take the job.

If he can coach at the highest level…he’ll keep it…

Squishy123 January 16, 2014 at 7:12 pm

Show me one coach offered an SEC who says he’s turning it down because he’s scared of the conference. It’s looking like the SEC has peaked, or other conferences are rising to the same level as the SEC.

GrandTango January 16, 2014 at 7:27 pm

Some coaches pursue a particular job more than another. If you know you may not be that good, you’ll try for an ACC job over an SEC job…

Looks like Chad Morris believes he can coach well enough at Vandy…he’s GONE, I’m hearing..and that’s REAL bad for Clemson and Dabo…

Squishy123 January 16, 2014 at 8:54 pm

You truly are an idiot aren’t you…

I’m a Happy Genius, as long as I wax your @$$ on a daily basis. That is my goal.

Looks like you heard wrong, huh?

Idiot.

Gamecock for Life January 17, 2014 at 9:40 am

“It’s looking like the SEC has peaked”
How is that so? 3 teams in the final top 5, 4 in the top 7, 5 in in the top 15, 6 in the top 20, and 7 in the top 25. What could you possibly be basing this statement on? I am sure you are reading it through orange tented glassed, but damn man, even with that tint you cant make a stupid statement like that.

Silvio Dante January 16, 2014 at 2:06 pm

It’s worked before. Steve Spurrier has been quite successful at it, so why not Chad Morris? If he receives the offer, Morris should take it before his self-absorbed, shyster boss tries to talk him out of it.

Who has who in their heads? An article about USC coaches goes right to the Clemson coach bashing. For a group of fans that say that Clemson sucks so bad, you sure seem worried about what their coaches do.

Or, if you are Will Folks sockpuppet to entice people to even read the comments..go make up some more crap about screwing Haley.

So I wonder if the other faculty and staff at Dirtpecker U. will receive huge raises as well? $700,000 I believe would hire 10 faculty members or 15-20 staff members.

Reply
Jackie Chiles January 16, 2014 at 11:32 am

Except the athletic department makes USC a profit so it’s not really costing USC anything to give Spurrier a raise.

Reply
GrandTango January 16, 2014 at 12:42 pm

Not only that: it’s smart to give Spurrier and staff a raise. USC is getting a bargain w/ Spurrier, even in an economy that has been horrible since Nov. 2008.

Reply
GrandTango January 16, 2014 at 12:40 pm

When you look at the cost of tuition, that keeps climbing…and the number of days faculty work…I think it would be time to ask for salary cuts for the staffs in Big University…

Faculty teaches Obama theology…yet since he got elected, incomes in America have declined every year. I think academia should get docked for providing a product that is returning at a declining rate…don’t you agree???

Reply
Prof. Longhair January 16, 2014 at 1:07 pm

I don’t think sports should be involved in academia, especially since half of the football team can’t even read…

Demon Dork January 16, 2014 at 1:32 pm

Some can count to 20 if they take off their shoes!

Squishy123 January 16, 2014 at 2:23 pm

Maybe if their tutor, note taker, and test reader help them.

bless her heart January 16, 2014 at 4:04 pm

But Squishy proved yesterday he can count to 20, in dollars that is. “$1,$2,$3,….$20, OK former Clemson football player, now I can blow you”

Squishy123 January 16, 2014 at 7:13 pm

Yeah, but your dad’s my favorite… he pays me with his EBT card.

bless her heart January 17, 2014 at 7:36 am

nice try squishy, I think that man lied to you. He couldn’t be my pops. Didn’t know you were so “low rent” you had to take EBT cards. I heard your street name is “Bitch with dem Luscious Lips” You got it in the showers of that d2 team you “played” for. now go get another towel JV

GrandTango January 16, 2014 at 1:40 pm

You prove my point…

Squishy123 January 16, 2014 at 7:07 pm

So using your logic, for example, Clowney is smarter than Pastides.

Norma Scok January 16, 2014 at 7:05 pm

How the F would you know what the faculty teaches? You’ve never darkened a doorstep there, much less any other college.

I believe you can go to Dirtpecker.edu and see faculty and the courses they teach.

VoiceofReason January 19, 2014 at 9:12 am

Must tough to swallow that Dirtpecker U is so much higher ranked than USC.

Squishy123 January 16, 2014 at 2:23 pm

What about the staff that work year round?

Reply
GrandTango January 16, 2014 at 2:36 pm

Again: When the whole country is taking a hit on income…yet the cost of college is going up…there is something WRONG.

Liberals hate private-sector earners getting paid, and they want government to control it. I say lets control the money college officials get, especially when the product they produce, because of their leftwing political hate, is deficient…

Reply
Jackie Chiles January 16, 2014 at 4:57 pm

When those staff generate hundreds of millions of dollars of economic activity per year, I’m sure USC will be happy to provide them with a raise.

Reply
Squishy123 January 16, 2014 at 7:10 pm

Who runs the university? The faculty who are mostly on nine month contracts? The adjunct faculty who are there teaching courses for $3000/course? Does the university not generate millions of dollars each year for the Columbia economy?

USC and Ft. Jackson close and Columbia will dry up and blow away except for the months the hundred or so legislators are in town.

bless her heart January 16, 2014 at 12:45 pm

I wonder why you don’t ask the same when Clemson gives their staff raises. Oh that’s right. USC didn’t want you, and you are still butthurt over it, so you feel you need to talk trash about them when ever you can. Get over it JV, they didn’t want you. Now go find another Clemson player to give you $20 for that pretty mouth of yours.

Reply
Squishy123 January 16, 2014 at 2:21 pm

No, I didn’t ask about Clemson because the article wasn’t about Clemson. BTW – the same thing happens at Clemson and every other university around the country.

Reply
bless her heart January 16, 2014 at 4:01 pm

Wow JV, you actually just said something in a manner not to just bash USC. And here you claim you don’t care.

Squishy123 January 16, 2014 at 7:00 pm

What? That college athletics have gotten out of control and no longer really a part of higher education? Division I football, basketball, baseball and hockey need to be viewed as farm clubs associated with a university. Treat it as a farm club/minor league where athletes are paid and don’t have to go to class. If they want a college degree they can apply and pay tuition just like every other student. No different than the Columbia Inferno or Blowfish.

As others have stated, the money is coming from the athletic department a separate entity than the university. So the only thing standing in the way is the NCAA.

Silvio Dante January 16, 2014 at 1:59 pm

Spurrier has got it made: a nice raise & extension, plus he gets to live, rent free, inside your head and that of your orange brothers.

Reply
Squishy123 January 16, 2014 at 2:22 pm

That makes a lot of sense….LMAO…

Clue: Gamecocks had fans like you in the Brad Scott days. You are the epitome of how a loser looks at life if you are a Gamecock fan. Clemson fans love idiots like you…because when they used to slap the $#!* out of you’d you’d cower, and suck them off. Thank goodness Spurrier’s ridded the program of your kind.

The guy who switches names January 18, 2014 at 4:35 pm

I’m a Silver Spur Donor. Does your dumbass donate money? Do you even have tickets to the games, and go? If not I am more of what the program wants than you. You don’t have many friends do you? If you do go to the games, my guess is its a tailgate of 1 and a bucket of Bojangles. I own and have owned a parking space a Carolina Park since I bought the spot from my father in 1998 and he bought 1 of the first when it opened back in 1985 as the first tailgate park in all of the country. you can find me there before and after every home game. I can promise you I am more of a gamecock than you.
Also when the F#ck have I ever defended Clemson? god you are a dumbfuck
